About the project

Council is committed to creating new lifestyle and leisure opportunities and delivering vibrant, liveable communities.

This project aims to build a new Bracken Ridge Library which incorporates the Bracken Ridge Ward Office. Also in the precinct is the existing Community Hall and Jabiru Community College.

Works include building a new library, undercover carpark and Ward Office in and around the existing library car park area nearest to Ferguson Park. Once most of these works are complete later next year, the existing library and Ward Office will be demolished.

The new library will include:

  • a terrace area
  • a separate deck overlooking Ferguson Park, two library meeting rooms, a lift, children’s area and Wi-Fi throughout
  • two new car parks, one located under the library and the other at ground level between the new library and existing Community Hall, providing approximately 50 spaces and new bike racks
  • a grassed courtyard in the centre of the precinct and other new landscaping.

Construction impacts

During these works, you can expect:

Noise, dust and other construction impacts

  • construction noise, dust and vibration at times – including excavation, pouring of concrete, installation of the steel structure, driveway and car park construction and removal of trees
  • increased vehicle movements with reversing alarms and flashing lights – due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Changed car parking access

  • no onsite car parking for visitors. On street parking only.
  • two accessible car parks for people with disabilities.
  • restricted delivery and courier parking available at the rear of the hall.
  • emergency vehicle access at the rear of the hall.
  • Council is offering a weekly temporary Council cab service on Thursdays from Bracken Ridge and Bald Hills to the Bracken Ridge library during the construction of the new Bracken Ridge Library. The service costs $1.50 per one way trip.
  • Council Cabs is a shared taxi service allowing multiple travellers living in the same area to travel together on the same trip. Customers will be dropped off and picked up at the loading zone behind the Bracken Ridge Hall.
  • This temporary service is available to residents who are over 60 years, pension or Centrelink Senior card holders, or mobility impaired. Carers and minors accompanying the passenger can travel free of charge.
  • To access this service, please book by midday Wednesday by calling Council Cabs on 3403 2227. Council Cabs will confirm the pick-up times at the time of booking.

Library services

  • existing library open as normal - Tuesday to Saturday
  • book return location - unchanged.
  • library events and scheduled programs - refer to library for any changes
  • a temporary closure of library services at this site will be required prior to the opening of the new library so the existing library can be demolished. Advance notice of this closure and how to access the nearest alternative library service will be provided
  • restricted pedestrian entry off Bracken Street - construction fencing along path to entry.

Ward Office services

  • Ward Office operating as normal
  • restricted pedestrian entry off Bracken Street - construction fencing along path to entry.

Community Hall, Jabiru Community and Youth Services Association, and Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Group (SANDBAG)

  • Community Hall, Jabiru and SANDBAG operating as normal
  • no change to service expected - refer to managers of each location
  • restricted pedestrian entry off Bracken Street - construction fencing along path to entry
  • the tennis courts are not impacted by works.

Playground closure

  • Ferguson Park playground will be closed during works for the safety of residents and visitors and re-opened as soon as it is deemed safe.
  • some playground equipment is available up the hill from the closed playground behind Jabiru and the tennis court area.
  • other nearby playground equipment in park playgrounds is available in the Bracken Ridge Reserve (Barrett Street) and McPherson Park.

Tree removals

  • some trees needed to be removed in the area where the new library and ward office are being built. Trees in Ferguson Park and along the Barrett Street frontage will be retained
  • replacement trees will be planted within the ward in line with Council’s offset planting policy.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption wherever possible.  We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while we deliver your vibrant new library.

Project timing

Construction commenced on Monday 7 January 2019 and is expected to be completed in late 2019.

Work commenced in March on the basement columns and retaining walls and creating the base for the floor of the new car park. Works are progressing on completing the retaining wall structures including backfilling, installing in ground services and pouring the slab for the new Library and Ward Office.

Construction works will generally take place between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
