About the project
The Witton Barracks Park project is being delivered in stages. The first stage was completed in late 2016 and involved site investigations and priority remediation works to secure the buildings within the former military site and prevent them falling into disrepair.
In 2017, Council provided an interim green open space on the site for community access. This involved establishing approximately 5000m² at the front of the Witton Barracks site, bordering Lambert Road, as green open space for enjoyment by the community.
In July 2017, Council sought the views of the community on a long-term vision for Witton Barracks. Council is giving careful consideration to the comments received from the public before finalising the overall concept plan for the Witton Barracks site.
Interim improvement works
Council is pleased to advise 2018 interim improvement works at the Witton Barracks Park site are complete.
These works included:
- installation of a picnic shelter within the open space
- refurbishment works to five historic buildings including installing new eaves, gutters, joinery and verandas
- replacement of roofs on the HQ building and Transport shed
- removal of graffiti from all heritage buildings
- removal of timber fencing, garage, disused BBQ and an underground storage tank
- removal of one tree, tree trimming and shrub removal.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while these important works were carried out.
Council would like to thank the community for their feedback on Witton Barracks. The comments and suggestions that people have provided through this consultation process will help Council refine the overall concept design for the Witton Barracks site and help Council provide park facilities that meet your needs.
There will be other opportunities in the future to have your say on the Witton Barracks site.
It is intended that the various elements of the overall concept design will be delivered in stages over a timeframe of up to twenty years, starting with the provision of park facilities and embellishments in the open space precinct.
It is anticipated that further consultation will be undertaken in the future regarding the preservation and proposed use of the Barracks buildings by the community. It is likely that the overall concept design may need to be further refined at this stage.
The Barracks buildings are an important part of Brisbane’s heritage and are listed on the State Heritage Register. Any proposed uses of the Barracks buildings will need to be guided by suitably qualified professional heritage architects and subject to detailed assessment under the appropriate legislation. This means that a firm timeframe for the use of the Barracks buildings by the community cannot be given at this stage, although it is estimated that this process may take up to five years.
A timeframe for embellishing the Lambert Road precinct has not been set.
