Project update and site investigations

Earlier this year, Brisbane City Council released the concept design for the Colmslie Beach Reserve public pontoon. The project was one of Council’s commitments to improving access to the Brisbane River for residents and visitors as part of the River Access Network.

The Colmslie Beach Reserve public pontoon project was announced in the 2016-17 budget. A concept design/artist impression was distributed through a community newsletter in February 2018.

Project information

Following further investigations and design works, Council identified significant constraints to the Colmslie Beach Reserve site.

The accessibility through Colmslie Beach Reserve and the environmental risks associated with the project were identified as key concerns. One of the main concerns was the length of ramping and associated local environment impacts to provide access from the upper level of the park to the lower level.

Council has decided to investigate an alternative location at Metroplex Avenue Park in Murarrie. This will provide a higher level of accessibility for users of all abilities while having minimal impacts on the environment.

Council remains committed to improving river access for the local community and a location for the Recreation Hub is being considered in Murarrie, less than one kilometre downstream from the original location. There is an existing public (fishing) platform at this location, constructed as part of the original development that has been identified in poor condition and having ongoing maintenance issues.

Investigations are underway to repurpose this location and reconstruct the facility in a different form to provide a greater range of uses associated with a Recreation Hub.

The intention of the proposed facility would be to provide a launch and rest point for passive crafts such as:

  • canoes
  • kayaks
  • stand-up paddle boards
  • short term use for recreational craft
  • future on demand water taxis.

The extent or possibility for re-use of foundation or ramp elements will be explored during concept development.

The form of the pontoon elements will be very similar to that previously proposed at Colmslie Beach Reserve.

Access to this facility is off 69 Metroplex Avenue in Murarrie through a shared footpath through the park.

The area is expanding with new development and the facility will not only be a link in the River Access Network but will also provide a key access point for river users to access local amenities.

We're committed to keeping the local community informed. Once the site is confirmed and the design has been further progressed, Council will provide this information to the community. Details will include project details and construction time frames.
