Personal mobility devices

Regulations to allow the use of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs), such as Segways, were introduced by the Queensland Government in August 2013. The department of Transport and Main Roads provides information on the design requirements and road rules for PMDs. Enforcement of the Queensland road rules is undertaken by the Queensland Police Service.

Riding your PMD in Brisbane

PMDs can be used on road related areas such as footpaths, bicycle-only paths and shared paths, unless signed with a 'PMD prohibited' sign. In Brisbane, PMDs are prohibited in the following locations:

  • Queen Street Mall, Reddacliff Place, Brunswick Street Mall and Chinatown Mall
  • the pedestrian-only path of the Victoria Bridge (PMDs can use the shared path on the upstream side of the bridge)
  • the pedestrian-only path of the Go Between Bridge (PMDs can be used on the bicycle-only path on the upstream side of the bridge)
  • the pedestrian-only paths in the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park and Kurilpa Point Park (PMDs can be used on the bicycle-only paths).

For separated paths, PMDs must use the bicycle side of the path (e.g. Bicentennial Bikeway between Toowong and the City). Find out more about the different types of pathways that PMDs can use.

If you would like to undertake a commercial activity in Council parks or on Council bikeways using PMDs, please contact Council.
