About the project

The Brisbane International Cycle Park project aims to establish the reserve as a premier destination for international cycling, enhance the capacity of the reserve to meet sporting and recreation needs, and provide the community with safe pedestrian access, and cycle links to the wider Brisbane bikeway network.

Once complete, the Brisbane International Cycle Park at Murarrie Recreation Reserve will support Brisbane’s cycling community in the lead up to and long after the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Project benefits

The Brisbane International Cycle Park project will deliver:

  • international level criterium tracks and a 500-metre inline skating track
  • a new multi-purpose clubhouse for events
  • an upgraded car park which will formalise the car park and install up to 200 spaces
  • re-purposing the existing track to a multipurpose shadow track to allow for multiple recreational users and uses.

The works will also include new fencing, walkways, and plantings.

The new multi-level, multi-purpose clubhouse will be centrally located within the reserve and overlook the upgraded criterium and inline skating tracks. The clubhouse will be a two-storey, multi-use accessible facility and include:

  • public amenities
  • clubhouse change rooms and storage
  • community space
  • viewing terrace.

The car park is fully funded by the Australian Government.

The new multi-purpose clubhouse is proudly funded by the Queensland Government in association with Brisbane City Council.

Project timelines

Construction on the Brisbane International Cycle Park began in early 2023 with anticipated completion mid-2024, weather and site conditions permitting.

Construction will be undertaken in stages:

  • mid-February 2023, the car park upgrade started. The new car park upgrade will formalise the existing car park and increase the number of parking spaces up to 200. The car park upgrade is anticipated to be completed by mid-2023, weather and site conditions permitting.
  • end of March 2023, the international level criterium tracks, 500-metre inline skating track and multi-level clubhouse construction commenced. Anticipated completion by mid-2024, weather and site conditions permitting. This part of the project will also upgrade, where required, the existing cycle track around the perimeter of the Murarrie Recreation Reserve to become a multipurpose shadow track, to allow for multiple recreational users and uses.

Works will generally take place between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Council is committed to keeping residents informed of construction activities in their area and will provide advanced notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period.

What to expect during construction

During construction

During construction of the Brisbane International Cycle Park project, the community can expect:

  • the closure of the reserve, including the car park, skate park, basketball half-court, and ancillary facilities
  • site fencing to outline and enclose the work site
  • Bulimba Creek Bikeway to remain open with the connection between the bikeway and Murarrie train station maintained throughout construction.
  • Wynnum Road connection (closest to Northcliffe Street), along the Avenue pathway section of the reserve, will remain open during construction.
  • Northcliffe Street bridge connection to the Avenue pathway section of the reserve, will remain open during construction.
  • Some localised closures of the paths and bikeway from time to time. During these closures, Council will ensure diversions are in place and a traffic controller is on site to guide you through these detours.
  •  You may also experience noise, odour and dust during construction.

Council has identified a number of trees that will need to be removed. Any vegetation impacts will be offset in accordance with Council policies and relevant legislative requirements. In this instance, the project will undertake landscape planting which will include 122 native trees and 18,223 low shrubs and groundcovers.

Council and our contractors always endeavour to employ best working practices, with equipment used fitted with features designed to supress dust and airborne material. Unfortunately, as is the nature of construction, from time-to-time dust, odour, noise and other temporary inconveniences cannot always be fully mitigated.

Council thanks you for your patience while we complete these important works.
