Background
Zillmere Library has been operating from its current location at the corner of Jennings Street and Zillmere Road since 1971. While the library has been well maintained through regular maintenance and minor improvements, the last refurbishment was undertaken in 2007-2008. The new refurbishment plan has been developed using staff and customer feedback.
This project is being undertaken as part of the Library Refurbishment program.
Project timing and closures
Construction - February 2023 to mid-2023
Construction will generally take place between Monday and Friday between the hours of 6am to 6pm with Saturday works as required. Council will provide advance notification of any required out-of-hours works during construction.
During these works there will be periods of restricted access within the library as well as a complete closure of the library from Monday 17 April to Monday 8 May 2023. The library will be available for community use from Tuesday 9 May 2023, site conditions permitting. During this time library services can be accessed at nearby branches including:
- Banyo Library, 284 St Vincents Road, Banyo
- Sandgate Library, Seymour Street, Sandgate
- Bracken Ridge Library, Cnr Bracken & Barrett Streets, Bracken Ridge
- Chermside Library, 375 Hamilton Road, Chermside
Some regular library programs may be impacted by construction activities. Community groups which meet at the library can find an alternative venue by contacting Council’s Contact Centre on 07 3403 888. Alternatively, you can view library meeting room options.

Bush tucker feature garden
To further enhance the library refurbishment, a bush tucker garden will be established within the library’s external precinct to provide a cultural and learning focal point for the library and local community.
Respected community and cultural heritage advisors for the local area have been engaged in consultation for the design of this garden.
Local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander horticulturalists/specialists and working groups will also be engaged to develop the garden with Indigenous plants and trees known in the area for their use and suitability to thrive in the surrounding garden of the Zillmere Library.
This separate project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland.
Construction impacts
Access to certain areas of the library will be restricted in stages as works progress. You can also expect some noise from hand-held tools and construction workers moving around the library.
If you live or work near the library, you may experience some noise related to the works. There may also be some pedestrian detours in place, so please follow any signs and directions from traffic controllers.
Minimal street carparking along Jennings Street will be temporarily impacted to allow contractor staging and machinery access during the works.
We value your patience and cooperation while we undertake this important project.
Environment impacts
Council has identified one tree that will need to be removed to create a more accessible pathway from Zillmere Road. To offset the removal, Council will be planting two additional trees of similar size within the garden.
Council will also remove the turf and old brick work around the area to make way for the new garden beds and upgraded pathways.
All work will be carried out in accordance with the relevant environmental guidelines and Council will make every effort to minimise environmental impacts during construction
