Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha facilities and services

 

Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha open daily from 8am-6pm in summer (September to March) and 8am-5pm in winter (April to August). There are numerous picnic areas available throughout the gardens. Dogs are not permitted in the gardens.

Mt Coot-tha Visitor Information Centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Access to the gardens (via pedestrian entrances) remains open to the public 365 days per year.

The gardens include the Queensland Herbarium, Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Mt Coot-tha Library and the Gardens Café. Each of these facilities have their own opening hours.

Herbarium

The Queensland Herbarium is the centre for research and information on Queensland flora, vegetation and plant communities.

Herbarium staff are involved in the discovery and naming of around 30 newly discovered Queensland plant species each year.

The Herbarium holds about 830,000 preserved plant specimens in its collection. The species are mainly from Queensland and represent more than 245 years of history.

Plant identification

Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha offers a limited, free plant identification service. You can take your plant specimens to the reception area of the Administration building for identification. Plant specimens need to include leaves with flowers and/or fruit.

You need to complete a Request for Plant Identification form when you deliver the specimens.

Library

The collection at the Mt Coot-tha Library includes books and magazines on horticulture, natural science, botany, environmental and astronomy topics.

Located in the Administration building, the library is open:

  • Tuesday to Thursday - 10am-4pm
  • Friday, Sunday and Monday - 10am-3pm
  • Saturday - 9am-4pm.

Picnic areas

The gardens are a great place for picnics. Facilities include picnic tables and seats in shaded areas. There are also toilets and drinking fountains throughout the gardens.

There are no barbecue facilities. Note: the Kitchen in the Gardens cooking facilities are for the exclusive use of garden workshops only.

Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium

The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is Queensland's largest planetarium. It provides an important educational resource for adults and children. The planetarium features a range of astronomical shows and displays. Ticket prices apply.

Botanic Gardens Café

Located in the beautiful botanic gardens, the café offers light meals and refreshments and is open:

Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.00pm
Saturday 8.00am to 4.00pm
Sunday  8.00am to 4.00pm
