About the project
The investigations are part of Council's regular site auditing and environmental monitoring under the Landfill Remediation and Maintenance Program for the former Tramway Street closed landfill site. The site operated as a landfill between 1964 and 1982.
As part of environmental assessment works, Council installed monitoring wells within the Samford Road corridor between Tramway Street and Claverton Street from December 2017 to January 2018. Council will be undertaking additional monitoring as part of ongoing environmental investigations. The purpose is to inform any future remediation work needed to protect against land contamination from the site. The investigations will involve further monitoring of 33 wells installed on the median strip along Samford Road.
Monitoring will take place intermittently from August 2019 to mid-2020, generally at night between 8pm and 5am from Sunday to Friday. This work will be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure the safety of motorists and workers and to minimise traffic disruptions. Final dates and times for the monitoring will be determined based on factors such as traffic permit requirements and weather.
In early 2020, Council will also be installing (including drilling) and testing 16 new wells, mainly in Claverton Street and Avington Street.
Some temporary lane closure will be required at times, with traffic controllers onsite to assist road users and pedestrians. Local access will not be affected, but there may be some short delays and nearby residents may notice lighting for workers onsite.
Drilling works (occurring in early 2020) will take place during daytime hours from 7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday to minimise disruptions for nearby residents.
