Wally Tate Park improvement project - Runcorn

Brisbane City Council is pleased to release the final concept plan for Wally Tate Park, Runcorn. Feedback from the community has helped Council revise the concept plan to consider the needs of regular park users, residents and visitors.

The improvement project at Wally Tate Park is part of Council's commitment to enhancing and maintaining more than 2100 parks across Brisbane.

Council will start detailed design following the release of the final concept plan. Construction of outdoor fitness equipment and a multi-use games arena for ball sports was completed in June 2019.

About the project

Wally Tate Park is an established district park situated in the south Brisbane suburbs of Runcorn, Kuraby and Eight Mile Plains. The park stretches broadly from Underwood Road in the north to Beenleigh Road and the Beenleigh/Gold Coast rail line in the south. The park comprises areas zoned for district sport and recreation and district open space under Brisbane City Plan 2014

Project update

Following the release of the initial concept plan in August 2018, Council listened to feedback from the community. Updates to the Wally Tate Park improvement project concept plan will ensure all park users are considered including dog owners, sporting clubs and recreational park users.

The following  features have now been incorporated into the updated concept plan and will include:

  • maintaining the original size of the dog off-leash area with minor realignments
  • four cricket practice nets
  • rainbow bee-eater breeding area to be protected
  • relocation of additional car parking
  • new shared use junior sports field and upgraded senior field
  • new field lighting 
  • new amenities building
  • new access road and pedestrian path
  • shelters
  • proposed revegetation.

Completed works 

Construction of stage one works including the outdoor gym and multi-use games arena is now complete and open for use to park users.

Future stages

The updated concept plan will move into the detailed design phase. Following detailed design, Council will prepare for stage two works by seeking the necessary permits and approvals. Stage two works are proposed to start in mid-2020.

Project benefits

The Wally Tate Park improvement project proposes a green space that:

  • enhances existing sporting facilities
  • provides new public amenities
  • accommodates a variety of park users and visitors.
