About the project

The Wickham Park Precinct Plan was developed to guide the improvement, maintenance and management of the parks, connecting spaces and heritage sites in the area, to meet the changing needs of the city, residents and visitors.

As part of this plan, Council completed improvement works in Wickham and Observatory Parks in 2017, which included the installation of lighting and removal of fencing to enhance safety and improve visibility for pedestrians and cyclists. As part of maintenance works, Council upgraded the coloured up-lighting at the Old Windmill in March 2017.

The Wickham Park upgrade - stage 2 formed part of the Wickham Park Precinct Plan and aimed to further enhance amenity in this iconic Brisbane park.

Upgrade works included:

  • removing and replacing seating within the air raid shelter
  • creating a new large picnic setting area
  • improvements to the existing pathway that borders Wickham Terrace
  • new steps between Wickham Terrace and the park pathway
  • new seating walls located along the edge of the pathways
  • associated landscaping works.

Project benefits

This project aimed to enhance amenity in the park for residents and visitors by installing a picnic facility, seating and new steps where the park connects with Wickham Terrace.

It also contributes to the larger transformation of the precinct, which will address longer-term improvements to the safety, amenity and use of the park.

Project timing

Construction began in late April 2018 and was completed by late July 2018.

During construction, the project area and car park bordering Wickham Terrace and Albert Street was fenced off. Fencing has been removed and access is now available to the public.
