8 things you didn't know you could do at the library

With hundreds of thousands of library memberships across our 33 libraries (34 if you include our mobile library!), we are a city of library-lovers. But have you ever thought about all that your library card gives you?

The amazing Brisbane library collection, containing well over a million books, e-books, audiobooks and more, is just the start of what your Brisbane City Council library membership has to offer, so we’ve put together a list of eight things you might not know you can do in our libraries.

1. Digitise your memories

Got an old family wedding video you want to upload to the cloud? Or perhaps preserving travel slides is top of your to-do list? Our media conversion stations at Carindale and Chermside let you digitise hard copy media VHS tapes, audio cassettes, photographs, slides, film negatives and more for free. All you need is a USB or portable hard drive to save your new digital files and attend a group information session for all the top tips for making the most of the equipment.

2. Tend to your green thumb

Herb your enthusiasm for a greener thumb with libraries’ gardening workshops and working bees to help your garden grow. Join library community garden working bees, learn top gardening tips to help you live more sustainably, or simply stop by one of the community gardens to pick up some fresh herbs.

3. Record your own podcast

Got a voice for radio and a standout podcast idea? Bring it to life with podcast recording equipment available at Brisbane Square, Indooroopilly and Sunnybank Hills Libraries. After attending an Introduction to Podcasting workshop, you’ll be able to access the equipment for free in the library and start recording!

4. Get crafty at the Makerspace

Turn up the dial on your creative spark and book a session at Carindale Library’s Makerspace. Design clothes or mend your favourite threads on sewing machines and overlockers or bring unique jewellery creations to life using the laser cutter. Complete your induction session and you’re on your way to creating, collaboratively.

5. Get more tech savvy

Set yourself up for digital success at a free technology workshop. Our Tech Connect program, for all ages and abilities, will get you up to speed on setting up your email, using social media, learning the basics of coding, creating eye-catching graphic designs using freely available platforms and everything in between.

6. Discover a slice of history

Dig deep into the city’s history at Brisbane City Archives in Moorooka or search more than 25,000 images of Brisbane in the Brisbane Images database.

7. Stream movie night

Grab your favourite cinema snack and settle in for a night of movies or documentaries courtesy of Beamafilm, Council libraries’ streaming platform. There’s something for the whole family!

8. Keep the kids busy

Visit your local library for a range of children’s events to keep the kids busy and learning on weekends and during the school holidays. Can’t make it to the library this weekend? Check out the great range of online activities available with your library membership, including literacy, STEM, art and gardening activities to keep little hands busy. Visit the Brisbane library catalogue, eLibCat, to find a range of activities online and top up your at-home activity inspo.
