Council’s digital parking permit system

Brisbane City Council works with residents, businesses and local communities to provide fair and affordable access to on-street parking for everyone in local areas. In October 2018, Council introduced a digital parking permit system to replace the existing paper-based system and improve the application process. In August and September 2019, Council introduced additional permit products to provide a greater variety of permits to meet community needs.

About the digital system

Council’s digital parking permit system was introduced to provide a more streamlined process for residents. The digital system links vehicle registrations to permits. As a result, residents are no longer required to display a permit on their vehicle.

Other benefits of the new system include:

  • instant application and fast activation of permits when applied for online, via email or over the phone
  • access to a self-managed online portal for residents to manage their permits and applications
  • permits are valid for 12 months from the date of application, excluding short-term permits.

Parking permit acknowledgement notices

Council provided all existing permit holders with a free Parking Permit Acknowledgement Notice to use after 30 June 2018 until the digital permit system was in place. These acknowledgement notices are no longer valid.

New permit system transition schedule

All existing permit holders were transitioned to the digital permit system in a phased approach between October 2018 to June 2019. Council notified all existing permit holders by mail when their regulated parking permit scheme area was ready to change to the digital system. Residents had six weeks after being contacted by Council to transition over to the digital system.

The parking permit areas in the fifth phase were requested to transition over to the new system by 11.59pm Sunday 16 June 2019. Information sessions were held in all parking areas during each transition phase to assist residents in the using the digital permit system.
