About the project

The South Bank 3 ferry terminal, located opposite to the QUT Gardens Point ferry terminal, provides important CityHopper ferry services between North Quay and Sydney Street. The terminal was identified as requiring maintenance works to:

  • improve the amenity of the terminal
  • ensure it continues to provide valuable ferry services into the future.

Piling works

Piling works are planned to start in mid-July 2019 and are expected to take two weeks to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Piling works will generally involve using a barge to install eight piles. The piles will be placed in position using a combination of vibration and/or hammering methods. During the piling works, there will be an increase in noise and some vibration. These works will be intermittent. Some days there will be more noise and activity than others, depending on where the piles are located and how deep they need to be driven. Council's contractor will avoid piling activities in the early morning wherever possible.

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by the works and appreciates your patience during this important upgrade. We will provide updates during construction to keep you informed about the project and any activities likely to cause disruption.

Construction works

The maintenance project will generally involve:

  • replacement of the gangway
  • upgrading sections of the waiting area
  • replacing the pontoon to improve stability and freeboard height
  • replacing all of the existing piles
  • upgrading the access footpath.

During the works, South Bank 3 ferry terminal will be closed and South Bank 1 and 2 ferry terminals will remain open. CityHopper services will not stop at South Bank 3 ferry terminal during the works. The closest CityHopper ferry terminal is Maritime Museum. For timetable information on this service, phone Translink on 13 12 30 or visit the Translink website.

The majority of the construction works will be completed from the water. A barge will be visible on the Brisbane River for the duration of the works. Access to the site will be required through South Bank Parklands, via Tribune Street, when necessary. Traffic controllers will be in place when needed and surrounding businesses and users of the park may experience some construction-related noise and vibration associated with the works. For the safety of workers and pedestrians, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Pedestrians may be diverted around the work site  and where necessary, workers will be onsite to manage the movement of pedestrians and cyclists.

Works will generally be undertaken from Monday to Saturday, between 7am-5pm, weather and site conditions permitting. Some night and Sunday works may be required. Local businesses and pedestrians will be notified of any out-of-hours works, or works likely to cause disruption.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause and appreciate you patience while these important works are completed.
