Over the past 15 years, 113,000 students from 162 Brisbane primary schools have embraced the Active School Travel program. The Active School Travel program began in 2004 as a one-year road safety initiative with eight schools in Brisbane. In 2009, the program grew into a three-year travel behaviour change program which allowed for a longer Council-led intervention period to ensure the sustainability of the program at participating schools. This year, in its fifteenth year, 45 schools are currently participating in AST!
Today, the program offers more bike and scooter skills sessions, interactive stage performances with the Active Travel Crew and customised maps for each school, with useful active travel options for students.
Active School Travel mascots have changed over time. The program originally had ‘Roadstar’ as the mascot, followed by ‘Red and Green’ before introducing the Active Travel Crew in 2015, which includes Ryder, Scoot, Carsha, PT and Walker. The characters were created to reflect the five transport modes AST focuses on.
Drawing on theories of behaviour change and effective community engagement, the Active School Travel program has won several awards over the years. In 2018, the program was recognised by behaviour change experts as one of the most successful, innovative and adaptable travel programs in the world.
AST continues to evolve to meet the needs of the city’s diverse communities and their active travel needs.
Thank you to all schools who have been involved in the program since 2004 and encouraged active travel for healthier and happier communities.
