The AST program is designed to improve students’ road safety skills and equip them with information to actively travel to and from school safely and confidently. Engaging students through performances and activities is a great way to help them learn in a fun environment.
To support your students, the AST Crew are all set and ready to visit your school assembly this term to teach your students about road safety using music, humour and acrobatics. If you’re yet to receive a visit from the entertaining AST Crew this year, contact your AST Officer to arrange a performance.
Bike and scooter skills training sessions are also available for booking. We want more students to ride and scooter to school and to have the skills, confidence and experience to ride safely. To prepare your students to actively travel, the Active School Travel program offers students a free 60-minute skills training program with a professional coach. The AST program also offers scooter skills sessions to eligible schools, targeted at Prep-Year 3 students, and bike skills sessions for Years 4 -6 students. Each session has a maximum capacity of 15 students. Sessions include:
- bike/scooter and helmet checks
- bike control and manoeuvering through obstacles
- signalling, stopping and turning safely
- crossing intersections, roads and driveways
- QLD road rules and footpath etiquette.
These sessions are held at school during school time and students are encouraged to bring their own bike but have the option of using scooters and bikes provided by the instructor. To ensure good hygiene practices, bikes and scooters will be disinfected before and after use. All students must bring their own helmets.
Places are limited - be quick to secure your spot! Contact your AST Officer to find out more.
