School of Excellence 2018

ast school of excellence

Congratulations to St Sebastian’s School, Yeronga and St Joseph’s School, Nundah who are our joint winners of the 2018 School of Excellence award.

St Joseph’s focus on a different mode of active travel each month resulting in two Golden Boot wins – for cycling and public transport. They’ve successfully linked Active School Travel (AST) to the curriculum in English, geography, media and HPE. Their committee has representatives from all sections of the school community and continue to meet each month with their AST Officer, instead of once a term. They feature AST in their school newsletter and on their Facebook page using the hashtag #activeschooltravel so we can see their activities and successes. They even hosted Council’s Cycling Brisbane Instagram account for a week where they showed the whole of Brisbane their safe bike riders in action. Talk to your AST Officer about how your school can host Cycling Brisbane’s Instagram account.

The school no longer uses individual rewards and instead has a popular interclass competition, where the winning class has the privilege of using the sports box.

St Sebastian’s has achieved a massive 46% increase in active travellers since they started the program and they see an average of 63% of families choosing to leave the car at home.

Student involvement in decision-making and their monthly promotions ensure enhanced engagement. The entire year six leadership team contributes to AST campaign planning, rewards structure and promotion through unique means such as AST skits on assembly.

AST is linked to the curriculum across multiple year levels. In one of the best curriculum links we’ve seen, the students created the ActiveGo machine and app to electronically measure and report AST data, covering the entire year six design technology curriculum. This project won second place in the University of Queensland Young ICT Explorer competition and the students presented to digital start up experts and a full sitting of Brisbane City Council.

Congratulations to both St Sebastian’s and St Joseph’s as our 2018 Schools of Excellence!
