About the project

Council is replacing the existing bridge as it was nearing the end of its serviceable lifespan. The bridge will be replaced with an updated design that meets the current standard for public safety.

The upgrade will enhance usability for pedestrians and cyclists with a widened crossing and create a high quality and accessible bikeway for residents of Brisbane’s eastern suburbs.

Works to replace the Meadowbank Street park bridge include:

  • removing the existing bridge structure
  • installing a temporary bridge to maintain access
  • installing a new, upgraded 3.1 metre-wide bridge structure with 1.4 metre-high bike safe handrails
  • protective creek works to enhance the operation of the waterway and prolong the life of the new bridge structure.

Community impacts

Access to the bridge will be closed during construction. Council will install a temporary bridge adjacent to the existing bridge structure to maintain access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Council will undertake works from Monday to Friday between 6.30am to 5pm and some weekend or out-of-hours works may also be required. Council is committed to keeping the community informed of construction in their area and will provide advance notification of out-of-hours activities.

Vegetation impacts

Council identified eight trees that require removal as part of the project. Four trees have already been removed, with the remainder for removal at the start of construction. All trees are removed in consultation with a Council arborist. Council will make every effort to minimise environmental impacts during construction. Vegetation impacts will be offset in accordance with Council policies and relevant legislative requirements.

To facilitate the offset requirements, Council will be working with Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee to replant trees in the area.

Council would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during these works.

Timing

Council anticipates construction to start early January and be completed by mid-2019, weather and construction conditions permitting.
