About the project

The City Reach Boardwalk is suspended over the Brisbane River and extends from the Story Bridge to the City Botanic Gardens.

Council maintains a regular inspection and maintenance schedule of all Council-owned boardwalks, including the City Reach Boardwalk. During maintenance inspections, Council identified that sections of the boardwalk require works to enhance the life of the structure.

This important rehabilitation project forms part of Council’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents while ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

Scope of works

The scope of works will be delivered in two stages and includes works on the boardwalk and supporting structures. These rehabilitation works will focus on the areas of the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street and Customs House. Works for Stage 1 will occur on the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street. Stage 2 works will occur on the boardwalk outside Customs House.

Works for Stage 1 on the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street will include:

  • demolition of the existing structure above the boardwalk level to access the degraded concrete deck panels
  • removing concrete deck panels and replacing with new panels
  • reconstruction of the boardwalk.

Stage 2 works will occur in 2023. Further information will be provided closer to Stage 2 works commencing.

Stage 1 construction details

Stage 1 works on the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street are expected to start in late November 2022 and will be completed by early March 2023, weather and site conditions permitting.

Works will be undertaken between Monday to Friday, between the hours of 6.30am and 6pm. Some out of hours works may be required to take advantage of favourable tide conditions.

Nearby residents may notice some increases in noise during the works. Thank you for your patience while we complete these essential works.

The City Reach Boardwalk is safe for pedestrian and cyclist use prior to these rehabilitation works commencing.

Stage 1 detour

The boardwalk will be partially closed during Stage 1, with a detour in place for the duration of the works. The detour includes several possible alternative routes for boardwalk users, including a detour that is inclusive of all abilities.

Council is committed to keeping local residents informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period.
