About the project

The City Reach Boardwalk is suspended over the Brisbane River and extends from the Story Bridge to the City Botanic Gardens.

Council maintains a regular inspection and maintenance schedule of all Council-owned boardwalks, including the City Reach Boardwalk. During maintenance inspections, Council identified that sections of the boardwalk require works to enhance the life of the structure.

This important rehabilitation project forms part of Council’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents while ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

Scope of works

The scope of works will be delivered in two stages and includes works on the boardwalk and supporting structures. These rehabilitation works will focus on the areas of the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street and Customs House. Works for Stage 1 occurred on the boardwalk outside 443 Queen Street and were completed in late March 2023. Stage 2 works will occur on the boardwalk outside Customs House and works will occur in from mid-May to late June 2023.

Works for Stage 2 on the boardwalk outside Customs House will include:

  • demolition and replacement of degraded concrete deck panels
  • repairs to cracks in other concrete deck panels and supports, under both the Customs House and 443 Queen Street sections.
  • application of protective coating to concrete and steel elements
  • installation of new steel beams underneath boardwalk to provide additional support to the structure.

Stage 2 construction details

Stage 2 pre-construction activities commenced on the boardwalk outside Customs House in late April 2023. The boardwalk was closed outside Customs House and 443 Queen Street from mid-May to late June 2023. All works will be completed by mid-October 2023, weather and site conditions permitting.

Works will be undertaken between Monday to Friday, between the hours of 6.30am and 6pm. Some out of hours works may be required to take advantage of favourable tide conditions.

Nearby residents may notice some increases in noise during the works. Thank you for your patience while we complete these essential works.
