About the project

Built in 1994, the Riverwalk is 430m long, 4.6m wide and consists of timber decking planks on timber girders, headstocks and 118 timber piles. It plays a critical role in Brisbane’s transport network, catering for approximately 30,000 trips per week.

As part of Council's maintenance program, recent inspections of the Riverwalk highlighted multiple rusted brackets, splitting in some girders, significant weathering of the timber decking, as well as cracks and splitting in some piles.

The Riverwalk requires rehabilitation to ensure the ongoing safety of the structure underneath. The decking has also reached its expected lifespan and needs replacing.

To ensure the safety of pedestrian, cyclist and project workers, the Riverwalk will be closed while this work is undertaken. Upon completion of the Riverwalk rehabilitation works, it will be reopened as a shared path.

Users will be directed to use alternative routes, depending on their mode of travel. The pedestrian detour will run along Melbourne Street, Grey Street and Stanley Place while cyclists will travel through the Cultural Centre tunnel and Stanley Place. View the detour map (Word - 956kb).

Project timing

The project is anticipated to start Monday, 7 September 2020 and be completed by mid-2021, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Works will generally be undertaken between 6.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday, however some works may also be required between 6.30am and 5pm on Saturdays.

The timing of some construction activities will be affected by the requirement for works to be completed during tidal conditions.

Impacts during works

Construction noise

Residents and businesses in close proximity to the project site may experience some noise from construction activities. All efforts will be made by Council to minimise these impacts.

Site facility

A site facility will be established at Kurilpa Park, South Brisbane. This facility will be in place for the duration of the project.

Access changes

For the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, the Riverwalk will be closed from Monday 7 September 2020 to mid-2021, during which time detour signage will be in place.

Council understands the Riverwalk is a well-used and much-loved part of the Cultural Centre and South Bank experience, and as such aims to resume safe access as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while these important maintenance works are undertaken.
