Beams Road culvert widening project - Fitzgibbon

Brisbane City Council has started construction on the missing link along Beams Road between the intersections of Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road. About the project

Council identified the need to provide a shared path facility in this location. The shared path will greatly improve safety and accessibility for local residents, pedestrians and cyclists travelling through this area.

The 2.5 metre-wide shared path will extend along the northern side of Beams Road between The Big Easy Golf and Leisure Club and the Koobara Aboriginal and Islander Kindergarten. The new path will also provide a connection to the existing Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway on the northern side of Beams Road.

The project involves:

  • extending the existing culvert structure that traverses Cabbage Tree Creek
  • construct a new 2.5 metre-wide shared path on the northern side of Beams Road, including a new bicycle friendly handrail at the culvert
  • reconstructing the driveway entrance to the Koobara Aboriginal and Islander Kindergarten, between the road and the property boundary
  • reinstatement of the northern lane of Beams Road along the new shared path
  • turfing along the shared path, as required.

Council has removed five trees as part of this project. Council removed these trees in consultation with a Council arborist. Council will minimise any impact on the environment and will undertake any necessary environmental requirements after construction.

Works started in late April and are anticipated to be complete in mid-2019, weather and site conditions permitting. Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Some out-of-hours works will be required for road works and bridge extension works.

For the safety of people travelling through the area, pedestrian and cyclist detours will be in place during the works.

Local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, vibration, odour, lane closures and some traffic delays.

Signage and traffic control will be in place to guide road users through the site, with the speed limit reduced to 40km/h. Due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Council will minimise the impact of the works on the community as much as possible. Council will keep local residents informed of construction activity in their area. We will also provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption such as noisy and out-of-hours works.

Council is improving quality of life for residents while ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

Benefits

The path will improve access and safety for local residents and pedestrians and cyclists who travel through this area.
