About the project

The bridge provides an important link between Shelgate Street and Kinnerton Street across Downfall Creek for park users accessing Melaleuca Green Park.

The existing timber bridge was built in 1955, and is nearing the end of its serviceable lifespan. In order to maintain a safe crossing, the bridge will be replaced with a new steel bridge with a concrete deck.

The project will include:

  • replacing the existing timber bridge with a new 3.6 metre-wide steel bridge with a concrete deck
  • piling foundations for the new bridge
  • upgrading the footpath approaches at either end of the bridge
  • embankment protection works
  • landscaping and re-vegetation of disturbed areas.

Council has identified two trees that will need to be removed as part of this project. These trees will be removed in consultation with an arborist. Council is committed to minimising any impact on the environment and will undertake offset planting and landscaping within the project vicinity after construction.

Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Council is committed to keeping local residents informed and will provide advanced notification to the community for any out-of-hours works.

Local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, vibration, odour, lane closures and some traffic delays. Due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

During construction, access via the existing pathway and bridge will be closed to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and project workers. Alternative access points are available between Shelgate Street and Kinnerton Street, and detour signage will be in place to direct pathway users.

Project timings

Construction will commence in mid-July 2020 and is anticipated to be completed in November 2020, weather permitting.

Project benefits

The bridge replacement will improve the safety, accessibility and lifespan of the crossing.
