About the project

The Kangaroo Point Bikeway upgrade: stage 1 project is part of Council’s Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program. The program aims at reducing traffic congestion through dedicated bikeways and active travel options with a $100 million investment over four years from 2016-20.

This investment is aimed at providing safer access for those who currently cycle and increasing the number of cyclists in Brisbane.

Council and the Queensland Government jointly funded the Kangaroo Point Bikeway project with the Queensland Government contributing funding through the Cycling Network Local Government Grants program.

The Kangaroo Point Bikeway provides a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians, improves travel efficiency for commuter cyclists, enhances connectivity to the bikeway network and encourages commuter recreational walking and cycling.

The project forms part of a larger cycling connection to the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) via the Goodwill Bridge, Kangaroo Point, and the southern and eastern suburbs via the Woolloongabba Bikeway. The local community also benefits from an improved cycling link between the Goodwill Bridge and the Veloway 1 (V1).

This project is part of Council's plan to get residents home quicker and safer with more active transport options as part of Brisbane's growing network of safe, convenient and connected bikeways.

For construction purposes, the project was divided into three stages.

  • Stage 1A involved Lower River Terrace from the V1 connection at the Pacific Motorway underpass to the intersection of Dock Street and Little Dock Street
  • Stage 1B continued from Stage 1A along Little Dock Street, from Dock Street intersection to the Goodwill Bridge.
  • Stage 1C included an upgrade of the Dock Street and Vulture Street intersection to connect the Woolloongabba and Kangaroo Point bikeways and was delivered as part of the Woolloongabba Bikeway project.

Key features of the project include:

  • a new four-metre-wide, bi-directional bikeway that extends for the 320 metres along Lower River Terrace and Dock Street, from the V1 to the intersection of Little Dock and Dock streets
  • a 'shared street' - a bicycle and vehicle shared'use area on Little Dock Street from the intersection of Little Dock and Dock streets to the Goodwill Bridge forecourt
  • upgrades to the intersection of Little Dock and Dock streets with priority for cyclists to facilitate the transition from the shared street to the new Stage 1A dedicated bikeway
  • increasing the size of the concrete traffic island on Dock Street to provide additional storage capacity for pedestrians and cyclists, including shifting the existing slip lane to the east to accommodate the larger island.

Stage 1A

Stage 1A began in June 2018 and involved upgrading the Kangaroo Bikeway along Lower River Terrace from the V1 connection at the Pacific Motorway underpass to the intersection of Dock Street and Little Dock Streets. Stage 1A included the following improvements and features:

  • a new four-metre-wide bi-directional bikeway that extends for 320 metres along Lower River Terrace and Dock Street from the V1 to the intersection of Little Dock and Dock Street
  • improvements to pedestrian paths and pedestrian access to existing footpaths
  • new landscaping and tree planting along sections of the bikeway
  • improved bicycle crossing at the intersection of Lower River Terrace and the V1.

Stage 1B

Stage 1B, continues from 1A along Little Dock Street from the Dock Street intersection to the Goodwill Bridge. Construction works commenced in early 2019.

The design aims to improve both the safety and usability for all cyclists, pedestrians and motorists. The design included the following improvements and features:

  • installation of a ‘shared street’ – a bicycle and vehicle shared-use area on Little Dock Street from the intersection of Little Dock and Dock Streets to the Goodwill Bridge forecourt
  • installation of a paved roadway surface at the Little Dock Street shared zone adjacent to the Goodwill Bridge
  • installation of raised zebra crossing points for pedestrians at the Goodwill Bridge forecourt and on Little Dock Street adjacent to the Griffith University Film School
  • construction of improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities beside the Griffith University Film School from Little Dock Street to the intersection of Dock, Vulture and Stanley Streets
  • removal of the cycle ramp and redirection of cyclists along Little Dock Street to the new dedicated bikeway along Dock Street and Lower River Terrace
  • improvements to the existing pedestrian path alongside Little Dock Street
  • upgrades to the intersection of Little Dock and Dock Streets with priority for cyclists to facilitate the transition from the ‘shared street’ to the new stage 1A dedicated bikeway
  • improvements to landscaping and lighting.

The speed limit along Little Dock Street has been reduced to 20 km/h. This change creates a slower shared environment for cyclists and motorists.

Stage 1C

Stage 1C  included the upgrade of the Dock Street and Vulture Street intersection to connect the Woolloongabba Bikeway and the Kangaroo Point Bikeway. Stage 1C was delivered as part of the Woolloongabba Bikeway project.

The Woolloongabba Bikeway project was completed in July 2019. For information, view the Woolloongabba Bikeway project page.

Stage 1C provides an improved cycling and pedestrian link to the Woolloongabba Bikeway project via an upgraded intersection at Vulture Street and Dock Street. This included the following improvements and features:

  • increasing the size of the concrete traffic island on Dock Street to provide additional storage capacity for pedestrians and cyclists, including shifting the existing slip lane to the east to accommodate the larger island
  • building out the kerb on the western side of Dock Street to improve sight-lines and storage capacity
  • landscaping works within Dock Street Park
  • footpath upgrades
  • pavement marking.

This stage included some tree removal. Council planted new trees as part of the project to offset vegetation removals within Dock Street Park.
