About the project

The Normanby Fiveways Bikeway lighting project is part of Council’s Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program. Council is creating dedicated bikeways and active travel option with a $100 million investment over four years between 2016 and 2020.

Council identified this section of the bikeway for lighting and pathway upgrades to improve safety, following multiple requests from the community. This section of the North Brisbane Bikeway is adjacent to Brisbane Grammar School and Brisbane Girls Grammar School.

The North Brisbane Bikeway is a primary cycle route from the Brisbane Central Business District to the northern suburbs. The bikeway carries high volumes of pedestrians and cyclists.

The project was jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government's Cycle Network Local Government Grants program with the Queensland Government contributing 50 per cent funding.

Project details

This project involved installing new LED lighting along an existing section of the bikeway behind the Brisbane Grammar school and Brisbane Girls Grammar School, between College Road and Victoria Park, Spring Hill.

Stage 2 works, completed in July 2019, involved upgrading three existing bikeway intersections within Victoria Park, on either side of the land bridge across the Inner City Bypass, to improve safety and efficiency for all pathway users.

Project benefits

Improved visibility will assist all pathway users to safely move through the area. An increase in walking and cycling can have a positive impact on the health of the community.

The project is part of Council's plan to get residents home quicker and safer, with improved active transport options as part of Brisbane's growing network of safe, convenient and connected bikeways.

Timing

Council completed stage 1 of these works in July 2018. Stage 2 was completed in July 2019.
