About the project

As part of the Patrick Lane intersection improvements project, Council undertook works to improve safety for cyclists and other road users travelling inbound at the Land Street and Patrick Lane intersection, as well as the Land Street underpass in Auchenflower and the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek (near the intersection of Lang Parade) in Milton.

In August 2019, Council also recently completed some additional works to relocate a traffic signal and install an additional advance cyclist detection system at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection.

Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection, Auchenflower

Work at this intersection improved safety for cyclists travelling inbound on Land Street, towards the Wesley Hospital and Bicentennial Bikeway. Works involved:

  • reconfiguring the traffic lanes on Land Street, to provide one dedicated left-turn lane, and one through traffic lane (the dedicated right-turn lane will remain)
  • installing dedicated bicycle traffic lights and adjusting the traffic signal phasing to separate cyclists continuing straight from left turning vehicles
  • installing 30 metres of safe cycle separators to separate the on-road bicycle lane and the adjacent lane
  • extending the green pavement treatment along 30 metres of the on-road bicycle lane
  • updating pavement markings.

Following feedback from the community, Council also undertook additional works at the intersection of Patrick Lane and Land Street to improve safety for cyclists and other road users. Works included relocating the traffic signal on the south-western corner of the intersection closer to the road to further improve visibility for all road users. An additional advance detection system for cyclists was also installed on the new traffic signal to improve cyclist detection and reduce wait times for cyclists at this intersection.

Land Street underpass, Auchenflower

Improvement works on approaches to, and inside, the Land Street underpass, improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians, including:

  • upgrading pavement markings to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic, and minimise potential conflicts
  • installing directional signage and speed limit signage at the underpass entrance on Bicentennial Bikeway

Additional works - installation of electronic signage system

Council is pleased to advise that an electronic signage system will be installed at both entrances to the Land Street underpass to provide advance warning of pedestrians and cyclists in the underpass to improve safety for all road users.

Works to install the electronic signage system at the Land Street underpass are anticipated to start from Monday 18 November 2019 and be completed in December 2019, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Works to install the electronic signage system will involve:

  • installing electronic signage at each end of the underpass to provide advance warnings of cyclists and pedestrians in the underpass, and to advise users to slow down if travelling too fast
  • installing a sensor system at each end of the underpass to detect cyclists and pedestrians
  • installing new conduit and cables to connect the electronic signage system

During construction, residents near the works may experience low levels of noise, dust and increased construction vehicle movements through the local area. Temporary lighting from portable light towers may be required for the night works.

Temporary lane closures and traffic changes will be required and motorists and cyclists may experience delays when travelling through the area. Please look for warning signage and follow the direction of traffic controllers. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we undertake these important works.

Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek, Milton

Improvement works at the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at the intersection of the bikeway and the pedestrian underpass near Lang Parade. Works involved:

  • removal of existing pavement markings
  • installing new pavement marking and signage to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic and minimise potential conflicts.

Project benefits

The Patrick Lane intersection improvements project will improve safety for all road and bikeway users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection and Land Street underpass in Auchenflower and Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek in Milton.

Timing

Installation of electronic signage system at the Land Street underpass

Works to install the electronic signage system at the Land Street underpass are anticipated to start from Monday 18 November 2019 and be completed in December 2019, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The majority of works will be undertaken during the day, Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm. Some works may be required to be undertaken at night, between 9pm and 5am to minimise traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of motorists and workers. Council will provide advance notification prior to out-of-hours works occurring.

Where possible, noisier works (such as saw cutting of the road) will occur prior to 11pm, however residents may still experience some noise and increased lighting after 11pm from plant and machinery operating throughout the night and morning.
