About the project

Council identified the need to improve safety for cyclists and other road users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection. As part of this project, improvement works were also undertaken at the Land Street underpass, in Auchenflower, and at the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek (near the intersection of Lang Parade), in Milton.

The majority of works for the Patrick Lane intersection improvements project were completed in May 2019, which improved safety for cyclists travelling inbound on Land Street, towards the Wesley Hospital and Bicentennial Bikeway.

Council is planning to undertake additional works at the intersection of Patrick Lane and Land Street. Works will include relocating the traffic signal on the south-western corner of the intersection closer to the road to improve visibility of the signal for all road users. An additional advanced detection system for cyclists will also be installed on the new traffic signal to improve cyclist detection and reduce wait times.

Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection, Auchenflower

Work at this intersection improved safety for cyclists travelling inbound on Land Street, towards the Wesley Hospital and Bicentennial Bikeway. Works involved:

  • reconfiguring the traffic lanes on Land Street, to provide one dedicated left-turn lane, and one through traffic lane (the dedicated right-turn lane will remain)
  • installing dedicated bicycle traffic lights and adjusting the traffic signal phasing to separate cyclists continuing straight from left turning vehicles
  • installing 30 metres of safe cycle separators to separate the on-road bicycle lane and the adjacent lane
  • extending the green pavement treatment along 30 metres of the on-road bicycle lane
  • updating pavement markings.

Land Street underpass, Auchenflower

Improvement works on approaches to, and inside, the Land Street underpass, improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Works involved:

  • upgrading pavement markings to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic, and minimise potential conflicts
  • installing directional signage and speed limit signage at the underpass entrance on Bicentennial Bikeway

Council is also planning to install a sensor and electronic signage at both entrances to the underpass, to notify when other users are travelling through the underpass.

Due to the lead times for the manufacture of the sensor system and electronic signage, this will be installed in the coming months. Council will provide further advance notification of the installation works.

Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek, Milton

Improvement works at the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at the intersection of the bikeway and the pedestrian underpass near Lang Parade. Works involved:

  • removal of existing pavement markings
  • installing new pavement marking and signage to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic and minimise potential conflicts.

Project benefits

The Patrick Lane intersection improvements project will improve safety for all road and bikeway users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection and Land Street underpass in Auchenflower and Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek in Milton.

The additional works will improve visibility of the traffic signal for all road and bikeway users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection.

Timing

Works to install the new traffic signal and advanced cyclist detection system will start from Sunday 25 August 2019 and will be undertaken intermittently over a four-week period, weather and site conditions permitting.

The majority of works will be undertaken on weekends when traffic volumes are lower than usual and between the hours of 7am and 5pm. Some works will be undertaken between Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7am and 5pm. Should any night works be required, Council will notify the local community in advance of the works.

The sensor and electronic signage are expected to be installed at the Land Street underpass in late 2019.
