About the project

Bretts Wharf Riverwalk is a pedestrian and bicycle, concrete, shared path suspended over the north bank of the Brisbane River at Hamilton. The structure is 210 metres long and 4.8 metres wide and runs east from Bretts Wharf ferry terminal.

During regular maintenance inspections, Council identified that a section of the riverwalk, adjacent to Bretts Wharf Apartments, requires work to enhance the life of the structure and ensure that it remains safe and serviceable, without restrictions, for the benefit of users.

The Bretts Wharf Riverwalk rehabilitation project is part of Council's Boardwalk Rehabilitation Program, which is part of Council's commitment to improving quality of life for residents, while ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

Project information

To improve the safety and life of Bretts Wharf Riverwalk, Council will be stabilising the river bank and piles that support the riverwalk. In particular, the following work will be carried out:

  • installing a rock armour seawall
  • injecting cement stabilised fill and sand into the void under the deck
  • minor repairs and replacement of the corroded under-deck reinforcements (where required).

The riverwalk will remain open for the duration of the works, with only partial closures to be experienced.

Construction impacts

Works will generally be undertaken on site between the hours of 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. When necessary, works may also be undertaken on Saturday between 9am and 5pm when tide conditions are favourable. Council will provide notification ahead of such works.

Works will be conducted from a barge in the river (adjacent to the riverwalk) and access to the site will also be required along the riverwalk. Nearby residents may notice construction noise associated with this work. We will keep local residents informed of construction activity and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause increased disruption during the construction period wherever possible.

Council is committed to minimising the impact of the works on riverwalk users, as well as local residents. We thank local residents and riverwalk users in advance for their patience and understanding during these important works.

Note - these works are being undertaken separate to the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade.
