About the project

The Noble Street pedestrian bridge was closed to pedestrians in 2009 due to the deterioration of its structural components and public safety concerns. Council replaced the Noble Street pedestrian bridge with an alternative bridge approximately 80 metres to the west, connecting Herston, Windsor and Wilston.

In April 2019, Council completed stage one scope of works, which involved removing the two southern spans of the closed Noble Street pedestrian bridge superstructure.

Removal works on the second and final stage have commenced.

Project details

The works involved in the second stage will include:

  • removal of the remainder of the bridge structure, including the three northern spans, piers and abutments
  • removal of four trees and trimming of mangroves to undertake removal fo the bridge structure
  • creek bank stabilisation and landscaping works
  • removal of an existing footpath that connects to the pedestrian bridge in Gould Park.

Council has identified approximately four trees that need to be removed, as well as trimming of mangroves in Breakfast Creek, in order to accommodate the removal of the remainder of the structure. These trees will be removed in consultation with a Council arborist.

Council is committed to minimising any impact on the environment and will undertake offset planting and landscaping in the local area.

Construction works and impacts

A site compound and a small site laydown area will be established in Ruby Robinson Reserve on Granville Street, to temporarily store materials and equipment. These will be secured during construction with the areas reinstated to their original condition following completion of the project.

The majority of works will generally take place between 7am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. Some out-of-hours works may also be required.

During works, a section of Granville Street and Noble Street, adjacent to the bridge, will be closed to traffic. Temporary footpath access will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists. Signage will be in place to help pedestrians and cyclists navigate through the temporary closures. Parking restrictions and temporary traffic arrangements will be in place for the duration of the works.

Council is committed to keeping local residents informed about the project and will provide more information to the community prior to the start of removal works.
