About the project

Council has identified the need to increase the availability of formal parking along Lavarack Avenue, Eagle Farm.

The Lavarack Avenue parking formalisation project involves constructing a section of formalised parking spaces along the centre median, east of the intersection of French Street, creating 40 spaces for cars and six spaces for B-double trucks.

To further improve safety for those parking and driving through this area, the project will involve the installation of new energy-efficient street lighting on the existing power poles along the centre median.

This project continues on from works undertaken in 2016, when Council constructed 19 car parks along the centre median of Lavarack Avenue, west of French Street.

The project will involve:

  • demolition of the existing centre median
  • installation of new centre median
  • pavement works
  • line marking
  • installation of new street lighting on existing power poles
  • turfing and landscaping.

Council has identified four trees that will need to be removed as part of this project. These trees will be removed in consultation with a Council arborist and all works will be undertaken in accordance with Council’s offset policies and legislative requirements, including eight new trees planted within the project vicinity. Council is committed to minimising any impact on the environment.

Council is considering other areas in Eagle Farm where there may be opportunities to construct similar formalised parking areas along the centre median. This includes continuing parking along Lavarack Avenue towards Holt Street. These projects are subject to future budget allocation.

Project benefits

The project benefits include:

  • an increase in the availability of safe and legal parking
  • improved visibility for road users
  • improved the streetscape.

Impacts during construction

Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. For the safety of workers, road users and pedestrians, some works may occur at night when traffic volumes are lowest.

Local businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, increased lighting, traffic delays and reduced speed limits through the construction site.

There will also be restrictions on kerbside parking along Lavarack Avenue during the works, to enable construction within the centre median. Every effort will be made to minimise impacts for local businesses.

Where necessary, traffic detours, signage and traffic control will be in place to guide road users through the site, with the speed limit reduced to 40 kilometres per hour. Safe pedestrian access through the area will be maintained at all times. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Council is committed to keeping local residents informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause additional disruption during the construction period.
