Chermside Street drainage upgrade - Teneriffe
The stormwater drainage upgrade project at Chermside Street, Teneriffe is part of Council’s commitment to ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.
|Address||Chermside Street, Teneriffe|
|Project outcomes||Improve the drainage system and minimise potential flooding impacts.|
Start of construction mid-June 2019.
About the project
The construction works involve:
- installing a new underground stormwater pipe on Chermside Street from Abercrombie Street through to Macquarie Street
- constructing an enclosed drop structure at the intersection of Chermside Street and Walker Avenue
- connecting the new stormwater infrastructure to an existing stormwater pipe in Macquarie Street
- constructing stormwater gully pits and access chambers along Chermside Street
- stabilising the rock embankment on Macquarie Street.
Construction works started late in June 2019 and are expected to be completed in late 2019, weather and site conditions permitting. Construction is primarily being undertaken between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday. While Council will work to minimise the occurrence of work outside these hours, it may be necessary when works cannot be safely carried out during the day. Prior notification will be provided ahead of out-of-hours works, where possible.
Impacts during construction
The main work area for the duration of the project is on the roadway in Chermside Street, between Abercrombie Street and Walker Avenue. Works started in Chermside Street and will then move toward the embankment beside the stairway connecting Chermside Street and Macquarie Street.
As works reach the end of Chermside Street, a work zone will also be established in Macquarie Street, in addition to the work zone in Chermside Street, to enable construction of the drop structure and connection to the existing stormwater pipe in Macquarie Street. A site office and material laydown area will be established on Chermside Street and be fenced off for the duration of works.
During construction, properties in close proximity to the work may experience construction noise, dust, vibrations and increased truck movements. This will be monitored, and every effort will be made to minimise any impact on the local community. For the safety of workers, pedestrians and cyclists, the work area will be fenced for the duration of works. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.
Access to driveways and residential car parks will remain open, however changed traffic conditions will be in place for the duration of the project. Temporary lane and footpath closures on both Chermside Street and Macquarie Street will be required during construction to facilitate the work. Pedestrian access to the stairs between Chermside Street and Macquarie Street will be restricted at times for safety reasons. Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to safely direct road users around the site on both Chermside Street and Macquarie Street. Motorists may experience some delays as they move through the areas and Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
Once complete, these works will improve the drainage system and minimise potential flooding impacts in the area. Council is committed to keeping local residents informed of construction activities in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period. Council would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the drainage capacity of the area.
Changed traffic conditions - Chermside Street
In order to safely complete construction, on-street parking will be restricted on both sides of Chermside Street for the duration of the works. Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
A lane closure will be required on Chermside Street, between Abercrombie Street and Walker Avenue. This will result in one-way vehicle access along Chermside Street from Walker Avenue towards Abercrombie Street. Traffic control will be in place to safely direct road users during works hours.
A temporary detour will be in place to direct motorists via Harcourt Street or Kent Street to access Walker Avenue via Teneriffe Drive. Residents on Chermside Street, between Abercrombie Street and Walker Avenue will maintain driveway access as left-in and left-out only.
Changed traffic conditions - Macquarie Street
A lane closure will be required on Macquarie Street, between Florence Street and Beeston Street. Traffic control will be in place to safely direct road users during these works.
The loading zone outside 110 Macquarie Street may be impacted, and on-street parking will be restricted on both sides of the street. The Australia Post box outside 110 Macquarie Street will be accessible, however some access restrictions will be in place for safety reasons.
