About the project

The Australian Government’s Black Spot Program is part of the National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to improve road safety by implementing upgrade measures at each black spot location to reduce the risk of crashes.

Between 2015 and 2021 there were eight reported crashes at the Forest Lake Boulevard and Rudyard Street intersection, seven of which resulted in medical treatment or hospitalisation. High traffic volumes, extended wait times and poor sightlines of vehicles travelling on Forest Lake Boulevard contribute to motorists misjudging safe gaps in the traffic when exiting from Rudyard Street on to Forest Lake Boulevard.

We are installing traffic lights at the intersection with pedestrian crossing facilities to improve safety for all road users, enhance the overall operation of the intersection and improve connectivity for people walking and riding through the area.

Project details

The project involves:

  • installing traffic lights at the intersection with pedestrian crossing facilities
  • modifying the centre medians on Forest Lake Boulevard
  • installing bike ramps to improve cycling connectivity
  • upgrading lighting throughout the intersection
  • installing new road pavement, signage and line marking.

Project timing

  • Start of construction – mid-January 2023
  • End of construction – mid-2023

Project benefits

  • improve safety for all road users
  • enhance access and connectivity for people walking and riding
  • improve intersection operation.

Works Hours

Works will take place from mid-January 2023 and is expected to be complete mid-2023, weather and site conditions permitting.

The majority of works will occur at night between Monday to Thursday, 7pm to 5am, when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure the safety of workers and road users. Some works may take place during the day between Monday and Saturday, 7am to 5pm. Council will provide advanced notification of any anticipated day works required throughout the construction period.

What the community can expect

Businesses and residents in close proximity to the intersection may experience:

  • increased noise from general construction activity
  • increased truck movements
  • low levels of vibration and dust
  • temporary traffic changes including lane closures and reduced speed limits
  • temporary detours for pedestrians and cyclists.

Environmental Impacts

Council has identified eight trees to be removed to facilitate the works at the Forest Lake Boulevard and Rudyard Street intersection. Tree trimming will also be required in this area. Replanting will occur within the local area, where possible, in line with Council’s commitment to keep our suburbs cooler, shadier and greener.

Site compound

Our construction team will establish a temporary laydown area for materials and equipment on the northern side of Forest Lake Boulevard, 45m west of Rudyard Street.

This area will be remediated once these important works on the intersection are complete.
