Ipswich Road tunnel lighting upgrade project – Woolloongabba

We are pleased to announce that we have upgraded the existing tunnel lighting on Ipswich Road, between Burke Street and Henry Street, Woolloongabba.

The lighting in the tunnel has been upgraded to compliant and energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting. We also relocated an existing switchboard from the tunnel to the nearby park at 22 Dibley Street, Woolloongabba.

Included in these works was also the addition of a decorative LED lighting strip at the beginning of the tunnel.  Installing decorative lighting on local assets, such as buildings, bridges and trees is a great way to highlight our city and its features, and to create an exciting, vibrant night life.

About the project

As part of Council’s program to maintain and improve the public lighting network, we have upgraded the tunnel lighting in the tunnel on Ipswich Road to energy efficient LEDs, reducing public lighting energy consumption by up to 60%.

This upgrade plays an important role in reducing our carbon footprint and achieving and maintaining carbon neutrality, contributing to our Brisbane Clean, Green, Sustainable 2017-2031 plan.

Upgrading the existing lighting system has further benefits, including:

  • Improving safety and visibility by ensuring the tunnel is appropriately lit.
  • Reducing maintenance and replacement costs, as well as disruptions to the community as, the new lighting lasts three or four times longer than the existing lighting.

This project is an initiative of the Australian Government and is funded under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) grant program.

Project timing

Construction commenced from May 2022 and the main works were completed in Mid-June 2023.

Additional works to install the decorative LED lighting strip at the entrance of the tunnel were completed in August 2023.
