Council has announced further investment to upgrade one of Brisbane’s busiest road corridors, Moggill Road. The Moggill Road corridor upgrade will alleviate congestion and improve safety for road users travelling through Brisbane’s busy western suburbs with works to improve the overall operation of the corridor to help residents get home sooner and safer.

Project stages

Stage 1 - Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade (current stage)

Council has identified the Moggill Road and Coonan Street intersection at Indooroopilly as a location for upgrade to improve safety and reduce congestion. This stage is a joint initiative funded by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government.

The Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade project includes the construction of an overpass from Coonan Street over Moggill Road to improve overall intersection operation and safety for all road users as well as ensure it can cater for future traffic demands.

Following community consultation, final design has been released for the upgrade of this intersection and The Georgiou Group has been awarded the main construction contract to deliver the upgrade now the removal of the former Audi dealership site is complete.

A community drop-in centre at 12 Riverview Terrace Indooroopilly is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9am and 4pm throughout construction.

Stage 2 - Traffic flow and public transport connection improvements

This stage of the Moggill Road corridor upgrade will further improve traffic conditions on Moggill Road maximising benefits of the Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade including:

Project objectives

Improve safety and accessibility and reduce congestion

About the project

Moggill Road and Coonan Street are two major arterial roads intersecting in a semi-controlled roundabout at Indooroopilly. The roads link Brisbane's outer west and south-western suburbs and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD).

The intersection caters for high traffic volumes and experiences significant congestion in peak hour periods, with:

  • 38,000 vehicles per day to the west of Moggill Road
  • 47,000 vehicles per day to the east of Moggill Road
  • 25,000 vehicles per day along Coonan Street.

Major queuing is experienced on approaches to the intersection, resulting in delays for all road users.

The intersection has a high crash history, with 32 recorded incidents between 2013-18, resulting in 10 hospitalisations and 17 requiring medical treatment. There were 12 further incidents between 2018 and 2020 including 3 hospitalizations, 5 medical treatment and 4 minor injuries.

The Moggill Road and Coonan Street corridors border commercial, retail and residential land area. The intersection also has limited pedestrian and active transport connectivity and accessibility.

The intersection will continue to provide a critical link to adjoining suburbs, the CBD and broader Brisbane for all transport modes, supporting commercial and residential development in the area.

Ensuring the intersection can cater for future traffic demands is critical, as well as providing safe and accessible transport options for all road users.

Video supporting information

The fly-through video shows a ground level perspective of the completed Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade project.  The video shows Moggill Road with the Brisbane city centre in a north-eastern direction.

The video shows pedestrians walking along the shared path on Moggill Road and crossing a slip lane from Coonan Street onto Moggill Road via a signalised intersection.

The video also shows cyclists using the shared path in this location.

The video then moves across the signalised intersection and follows the shared path adjacent to Moggill Road under the newly constructed Coonan Street overpass.  The video shows decorative screening on the overpass and landscaping adjacent to the shared path.

The video then continues along the shared path as it heads in a southerly direction to Coonan Street adjacent to Indooroopilly Central Shopping Centre.  The video shows a signalised pedestrian crossing on Coonan Street to allow shared path users to cross over to the footpath adjacent to the shopping centre and continue south on Coonan Street.

The video continues to follow the shared path.  A dedicated slip lane from Coonan Street to Indooroopilly Central Shopping Centre is on the left of screen.  The video continues onto to the bridge deck.  On the bridge deck there are four lanes divided by a concrete median.  Two lanes allow vehicles to turn from Moggill Road across the bridge and continue on Coonan Street, the other two lanes allow vehicles heading into Brisbane City to turn right onto Moggill Road via a signalised intersection.  There is a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge.

The angle of the camera then turns around to pan back over the bridge in a southbound direction.

Indooroopilly roundabout final design

Following the community consultation held in late 2019, Council’s project team refined the preferred design option to produce a final design for the upgrade.

The upgrade includes the construction of an overpass which will improve traffic flow, safety and active transport options as well as cater to existing and future traffic demands.

Feedback received by the community supported maintaining the existing left-turn movement from Moggill Road into Stamford Road.

Council amended the design to retain this left-turn access which provides an auxiliary lane for westbound traffic on Moggill Road, allowing a left-turn into Stamford Road.

Features of the roundabout upgrade include:

  • improve safety for road users and pedestrians at the intersection and nearby streets by allowing free flowing traffic on Moggill Road
  • improve traffic flow and reduce travel times with the construction of an overpass for vehicles on Coonan Street
  • create more accessible active transport options by upgrading shared pedestrian and cycle paths, improving active travel opportunities and connectivity
  • creating a greener space with new landscaping across the site.

    Project benefits

Once complete, the Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade will:

    • improve safety for road users and pedestrians at the intersection and nearby streets by allowing free flowing traffic on Moggill Road
    • improve traffic flow and reduce travel times with the construction of an overpass for vehicles on Coonan Street
    • create more accessible active transport options by upgrading shared pedestrian and cycle paths, improving active travel opportunities and connectivity
    • create a greener space with new landscaping across the site.

    Project features

Features of the preferred design include:

    • constructing an overpass that takes Coonan Street over Moggill Road, allowing through traffic on Moggill Road to flow freely
    • upgrading the existing Moggill Road service road, to connect the Coonan Street overpass with Moggill Road
    • changing access at Keating Street to remove the right turn in and out, to improve safety
    • changing access at Payne Street to remove the left turn in, to improve safety and traffic flow on Moggill Road
    • closing Nelson Parade at Moggill Road due to poor sight lines
    • providing shared pedestrian and cycle paths through the project area
    • retain left turn access from Moggill Road into Stamford Road.

Council is also investigating options for a cycling connection between the intersection and Indooroopilly Riverwalk.

    Community feedback

In late 2019, Council sought feedback on two concept design options to significantly improve safety at the intersection. Council met with the local community and key stakeholders and received overwhelming support to upgrade the intersection.

The majority of feedback received during the project’s consultation phase, including at two public information sessions, supported the construction of an overpass (Option B).

Council appreciates all the feedback that has been provided by local residents and looks forward to continuing to work with the community in the development of this important project. Feedback is invited from the community throughout all stages of the project.
