About the project

Council is planning to undertake works to stabilise a rock embankment at the south-east corner of the intersection, at to the property of 210 Kitchener Road, Kedron. Works will start in early December 2020 and take approximately four weeks to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

The project will include:

  • excavation and removal of loose material and debris
  • installation of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) to slope section along Kitchener Road. The shotcrete is proposed to be coloured and sculpted to match surrounding rock
  • installation of a stone-pitched retaining wall to the slope section along Webster Road.

Works will generally be undertaken at night, from Sunday to Thursday between 7pm and 7am, when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure the safety of road users and workers. Where possible, noisy works (such as drilling) will be completed by 11pm.

Impacts during works

Residents and businesses near Webster Road and Kitchener Road, Kedron may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust and vibration. Council will make every effort to minimise the impact of the works on the community as much as possible. Due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

A laydown area will be established in the easement on Webster Road, approximately 30 metres from the intersection with Kitchener Road, near bus stop #3866 (Webster Road at Somerset Hills, stop 36, Kedron). The site will be reinstated following the completion of the retaining wall replacement works.

Some temporary lane closures will be required and may include detours for cyclists and pedestrians. Traffic control will be in place to help motorists and pedestrians navigate around the site safely.

The rock embankment project site will be shut down for the Christmas period, from noon Thursday 24 December through to 10 January 2021. No works will be carried out during this time. Works will recommence in the new year, from 7pm Monday 11 January 2021.

The temporary lane and footpath closures in place prior to the Christmas shut-down period will continue to remain in place over this time. This is due to the number of changed conditions throughout the project site, and the need to maintain safety for all road and footpath users.

Council is committed to keeping local residents informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption such as noisy and out-of-hours works.

This retaining wall stabilisation project is part of Council’s commitment to protecting and improving the stability and safety of existing infrastructure around Brisbane.
