Trucks (heavy and long vehicles)
To help keep our residential streets accessible, restrictions apply to heavy and long vehicle parking.
Heavy and long vehicles, as defined in Brisbane City Council's Heavy & Long Vehicle Parking 1999 Local Law, are restricted from parking for longer than one hour within 100 metres of any residential land unless parked in accordance with a traffic sign or the exemptions listed below.
A long vehicle is defined in Brisbane City Council's Heavy & Long Vehicle Parking 1999 Local Law as any one of the following:
- a vehicle or trailer that is 7.5 metres long, or longer
- a vehicle or trailer that, together with any load or projection, is 7.5 metres long, or longer
- any combination (a prime mover connected to one or more trailers) which is 7.5 metres long or longer
- any component of a combination which if standing alone is five metres or longer.
A heavy vehicle is defined in Brisbane City Council's Heavy & Long Vehicle Parking 1999 Local Law as:
- any component of a combination with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 3 tonnes or more
- any other vehicle with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more.
In these definitions a combination means a prime mover connected to one or more trailers.
Exemptions
Heavy and long vehicles that have broken down are exempt from this restriction but only for the minimum time necessary to make minor repairs that would allow the vehicle to be moved to a place where it is lawfully parked.
Other exemptions include vehicles:
- carrying out emergency work
- delivering goods or providing services to the area
- undertaking construction or maintenance of a street
- undertaking utility installation approved by another authority permitted by legislation requirements
- parked on the non-residential side of a residential street only if there are no offsite street service facilities on the non-residential side.
Enforcement
Brisbane City Council officers will enforce this local law. Failure to comply will result in a penalty of 5 penalty units.
As of 1 July 2023, the value of a penalty unit is equal to $154.80. The fine amount must be rounded down to the nearest dollar after the calculation. For example, the fine amount for an infringement of two penalty units is: 2 x $154.80 = $309.60. The rounded down fine amount is $309.
