Brisbane Metro construction updates

Brisbane City Council is moving ahead with the turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro — a new era of connected travel. Brisbane Metro will deliver a 21-kilometre, turn-up-and-go service, with two dedicated lines connecting 18 stations from Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street, and Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital to The University of Queensland.

Major construction – Inner City North

Major construction activities for the Brisbane Metro project continue in Brisbane’s CBD including:

  • tunnelling activities beneath Adelaide Street
  • Adelaide Street surface works between George Street and Edward Street
  • sheet piling, bored piling and excavation activities at King George Square
  • replacing and realigning platform screen doors at King George Square Station
  • construction of a new substation on North Quay
  • piling activities on the river side of North Quay between Queen Street and Ann Street for the new cantilever structure.

Adelaide Street surface works 

From Sunday 18 February 2024, Brisbane Move commenced stage two of Adelaide Street surface works, between George Street and Albert Street.

Construction on Adelaide Street will deliver a revitalised streetscape from George Street to Edward Street in line with Brisbane City Council’s Adelaide Street Vision. Works include upgrading footpaths and bus stops, as well as new landscaping, street furniture and lighting, and relocating and installing in-ground services.

The following bus stop changes will apply from 7pm, Sunday 18 February:

  • Bus stops between George Street and Albert Street will close at night between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday. Affected services will move to alternative stops on Adelaide Street.
  • Bust stops between Albert Street and Edward Street will remain operational after 7pm.

Works on Adelaide Street will continue until late 2024 and will be undertaken out-of-hours (from 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday) and in three separate stages to minimise the impact to businesses, pedestrians and public transport users.

Key overnight pedestrian, public transport and traffic changes mid-February to late 2024

King George Square station works

Construction works will continue at King George Square station until mid-2025.

Construction activities include demolition on the King George Square busway station concourse and platform levels, site investigations, excavation, backfilling, concreting and piling activities. These works will take place:

  • on Adelaide Street between City Hall and the Adelaide Street and Albert Street intersection
  • within the existing King George Square busway station and at platform levels.

King George Square commuter, pedestrian, cyclist and motorist changes

Platform screen door works at King George Square Station  

In December 2023, Brisbane Move commenced major construction at King George Square station to replace and realign the platform screen doors to accommodate the new metro vehicles.

These works will continue until mid-2024 and will require temporary changes to services at King George Square and Queen Street bus stations. 

 King George Square and Queen Street bus station changes from 11 December 2023 – June 2024 

Progress update

King George Square station’s new bus stops 1a and 1b are open.

Stop 1a: Customers can board the 66 and 111.

Stop 1b: Customers can board the 330, 340, 333, 345 and 222 services. Stop 1b will open with two stopping bays. Services will arrive at either stopping bay. Customers are encouraged to look out for their service and board via the correct bay on arrival. 

The following stops at King George Square station are temporarily closed:  

  • Platform 1: 1e and 1f
  • Platform 2: 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d
  • Affected bus services will be maintained at alternative stops in the following locations:
    • on William Street, between Queen Street and Elizabeth Street 
    • on George Street, between Tank Street and Turbot Street
    • on Roma Street, between Garrick Street and Makerston Street
    • at Queen Street bus station.

Bus stop changes from 11 December 2023

North Quay and William Street works

Construction continues along North Quay and William Street throughout April 2024. Works include:

  • installation of scaffolding and piling works for a new cantilever structure on North Quay
  • site investigations, including potholing and concrete scanning
  • constructing the new substation on North Quay
  • vegetation pruning, landscaping and reinstatement works
  • installing conduits for new communications and electrical services
  • concreting and excavation activities
  • installation of new streetlights and traffic signals
  • constructing new sewer, water and drainage infrastructure, and modifications to existing sewer infrastructure
  • finishing works on William Street.

Victoria Bridge works

Works for Victoria Bridge are underway to support bus services and active transport connections across the CBD and South Brisbane. Works commenced in June 2022 and will continue throughout 2024, including:

  • construction of new kerb and guardrail on the bridge deck
  • sewer works underneath the South Brisbane bridge abutment
  • deliveries to both bridge abutments
  • mobilisation of a barge to the Brisbane River adjacent to Victoria Bridge from strengthening activities.

Works will be undertaken from both bridge abutments, and from barges on the river.

Temporary traffic, pedestrian and active transport changes

The CityLink Cycleway on Victoria Bridge will be temporarily closed from 29 May 2023 to mid-2024, with shared-user paths available on the upstream and downstream sides of the bridge. Traffic management and way-finding signage will be in place for bus services, pedestrians and active transport users.

Intermittent overnight lane closures and closure of the Elizabeth Street off-ramp on the Riverside Express adjacent to Victoria Bridge will continue.

Victoria Bridge spiral ramp closure until early April 2024

The spiral ramp from Victoria Bridge to the Clem Jones Promenade will remain closed until April 2024 for Victoria Bridge strengthening works. Access along the Clem Jones Promenade will be maintained at all times.

Alternative routes are available to pedestrians and active transport users. Traffic management and wayfinding signage will remain in place during this temporary closure.

Brisbane CBD traffic changes

Major construction in the Brisbane CBD continues, with significant traffic changes taking place on North Quay, William Street, George Street, Queen Street and Adelaide Street.

Changes include both permanent and temporary changed traffic and pedestrian conditions as well as permanent bus stop and public transport service changes.

Traffic, pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcycle changes during construction

  • Through south-bound vehicle access on North Quay is permanently closed at Adelaide Street, and all general traffic must turn left into Adelaide Street. Once on Adelaide Street, all general traffic must then turn left into George Street — only buses and authorised traffic are able to continue eastbound on Adelaide Street. Detour signage is in place to direct motorists.
  • The pedestrian crossing across Adelaide Street at North Quay is permanently closed. Detour signage is in place to direct pedestrians.
  • Approximately 40 motorcycle parks will remain temporarily closed until late 2024 on North Quay adjacent to Turbot Street for the construction of a new sewer line on North Quay.  

Traffic management is in place to guide motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters.

Bus stop changes

As a result of the construction, North Quay bus stop 109/110 permanently closed to all bus services. Adelaide Street bus stop 48 will close during major construction works. This means that any bus services that currently use these stops will be re-routed through the Brisbane CBD to service new or alternative bus stops.

There will also be additional stop changes to other services through the CBD, as a result of the re-routed services.

Impacted routes include:

  • North Quay stop 109/110:
    • Routes 360, 361 and 364
    • Routes 470, 475 and 476
  • Adelaide Street stop 48:
    • Route 555

Other CBD stop changes:

  • Route 61 (late Friday and Saturday nights only) will no longer service Ann Street stop 12
  • Routes 184/185 and routes 211/212 will no longer stop at Ann Street stop 10
  • Routes 360/361/364 and routes 475/476 will also no longer stop at Elizabeth Street stops 83 and 89, and Eagle Street stop 63 (at Riverside).
  • Route 470 will no longer stop at Herschel St stop 1, Elizabeth Street stops 83 and 89, and Eagle Street stop 63 (at Riverside)

Major Construction – Inner City South

Brisbane Metro works are continuing in South Brisbane, including:

  • construction of the new Cultural Centre station permanent platform 2 and minor finishing works at permanent platform 1 
  • works for the new lifts at the Queensland Museum forecourt and QPAC’s Melbourne Street Green
  • urban realm works on Melbourne Street between Edmonstone Street and Grey Street
  • urban realm works at QPAC’s Melbourne Street Green
  • decommissioning and removal of temporary platforms 2 and 3 from late April 2024 for works to begin on permanent platform 3 located on Melbourne Street.

Cultural Centre station upgrade, precinct enhancement works and public transport changes

Major construction at the Cultural Centre station, QPAC Melbourne Street Green and Queensland Museum forecourt includes:

  • construction of permanent platform 2 including concrete, road paving, steel installation, and fit-out works including electrical works, installing PIDs, lights, roofing, seating and signs
  • soft landscaping works including excavation works for garden beds and installing plants
  • installing façade and blockwork for the new sewer main and pipe across the Cultural Centre tunnel
  • service investigation, relocation and installation including electrical conduits, traffic signals, sewer, water and drainage infrastructure
  • asphalting works involving movement of work area fencing and barriers
  • minor finishing works including installing permanent seating and signage at platform 1. 

Cultural Centre station platform works 

Platform 1 - works complete

The new permanent platform 1 (inbound bus services) opened to the public on Monday 21 August 2023. 

Platform 2 – works underway and planned reopening of upgraded platform 2. 

The upgraded platform 2 at Cultural Centre station will be reopening and operating from Monday 22 April 2024.  

From this date, all bus services travelling out of the city will use the upgraded platform 2, including services toward South East Busway, West End and Highgate Hill.  

Temporary platforms 2 and 3 will be closed on this date to build the new permanent platform 3.

Platform 3 - upcoming works    

Works to construct a new permanent platform 3 (bus services toward West End and Highgate Hill) will commence in late April 2024 

As part of these works, piling activities are expected to commence in mid-May 2024 and continue for up to three weeks. The majority of these works will be completed during standard work hours (Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm, and Saturday 7am to 1pm).  

While platform 3 is being built, outbound services will be from platform 2. Construction activities to build platform 3 will continue until late 2024. 

Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of these works on nearby businesses and residents.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) Melbourne Street Green

Construction activities at QPAC Melbourne Street Green will continue in April 2024 and include:

  • hard and soft landscaping works including concrete pours
  • delivery and fit-out of stage structure and cladding
  • electrical fit-out of the QPAC Green event space
  • demolition and concreting works for the new QPAC entrance ramp
  • Installing a service gate to Melbourne Street from the QPAC Green event space
  • construction of the new lift including concreting works, installing the steel structure and electrical fit-out activities.

Queensland Museum forecourt

Construction activities at Queensland Museum forecourt will continue in April 2024 and include:

  • construction of the new lift including concreting works, installing the steel structure and electrical fit-out activities.
  • drainage installation works
  • installing conduits on Melbourne Street footpath, between Queensland Museum and Cultural Centre station platform 1, including saw cutting of pavement.

Melbourne Street between Edmonstone Street and Grey Street

Construction activities at Melbourne Street between Edmonstone Street and Grey Street will continue in April 2024 and include:

  • service investigation, relocation and installation including electrical conduits, sewer and water and drainage infrastructure
  • removal of old bus stop infrastructure on Melbourne Street near Edmonstone Street
  • signage installation on Melbourne Street near Edmonstone Street including demolition, concreting and electrical works
  • temporary and permanent changes to traffic signals
  • line marking and scrubbing, asphalting works and movement of work area fencing and barriers
  • minor defect and finishing works including concreting and hard and soft landscaping works.

Melbourne Street urban realm upgrades and public transport works, South Brisbane

Construction activities to revitalise Melbourne Street and Hope Street started in May 2023 and will continue until mid-2024, including:

  • new traffic lane alignment, resurfacing and line marking
  • new cycle lanes with planted concrete median to separate from general traffic
  • new hard and soft landscaping including seating and planting
  • Hope Street and Melbourne Street intersection footpath upgrade
  • new kerb ramps and tactiles at Melbourne Street intersections with Grey Street and Merivale Street
  • relocating and installing in-ground services
  • streamlining bus stops, including removing existing bus stops and installing a new inbound bus stop.

The next stage of the Melbourne Street urban realm upgrade commenced in December 2023 and continues until mid-2024.

Permanent public transport changes in place from 15 January 2024:

  • bus stop 4, Melbourne Street at Cordelia Street was relocated to its new location, 150 metres east, between Manning Street and Cordelia Street.

For information on public transport service changes:

There are temporary changed pedestrian and cyclist conditions on Melbourne Street footpaths between Manning Street and Grey Street from May 2023 to mid-2024. 

Access for pedestrians, cyclists and local businesses on Melbourne Street and Hope Street will be maintained unless otherwise notified. Traffic management will be in place to safely direct motorists, pedestrians and cyclists as required.

Suburban works

End of route charging facilities - Ernie's Roundabout, Herston and Countess Street, Petrie Terrace

Construction activities for the end of route vehicle charging facility on the Inner Northern Busway at Ernie’s Roundabout in Herston and at Countess Street, Petrie Terrace are due for completion in late April 2024.

Buranda busway station

As part of the Brisbane Metro major infrastructure works, construction works will continue in Woolloongabba to upgrade the Buranda Busway station. The upgrade involves increasing the length of both the inbound and outbound station platforms and widening the busway tunnel under O’Keefe Street. These works are expected to be completed in late 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Works include:

  • service utility relocation and permanent installation of water main and electrical
  • installation of services in the plaza including electrical conduits, water and drainage
  • backfilling and concreting activities to construct the pavement for the new plaza forecourt
  • hard landscaping works in the plaza
  • excavation, steel installation, concreting and backfilling activities to widen the busway tunnel beneath O'Keefe Street and extend station platforms.

There will also be ongoing activity at the site compound and laydown facility within a section of Hanlon Park. The site compound will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be used for workforce facilities, storage and the maintenance of construction equipment. The Hanlon Park site compound and laydown facility will be in place until 2024.

University of Queensland (UQ) Lakes station and Dutton Park works

As part of Brisbane Metro, Brisbane Move are undertaking construction works at UQ Lakes station in St Lucia to increase station capacity and provide end of route charging for the electric metro fleet.

Major construction activities at UQ Lakes station and Dutton Park Recreation Reserve are scheduled for completion in April 2024.

Works to date include:

  • upgrading Platform 1 to cater for metro vehicles, including installing fast-charging infrastructure 
  • constructing a new south-east station stop and shelter for bus services  
  • revitalising the pedestrian pathway behind Platform 1, providing viewing platforms near The University of Queensland Alumni Gardens 
  • reconfiguration of dedicated cyclist facilities, including improved connections between The University of Queensland and Eleanor Schonell Bridge
  • installing three charging containers within Dutton Park Recreation Reserve near the Elanor Schonell Bridge, to facilitate metro vehicles charging at UQ Lakes station
  • installing cable trays and pulling cable underneath Eleanor Schonell Bridge to UQ Lakes station to facilitate the electrical supply from Dutton Park Recreation Reserve to the station. 

UQ Lakes station reopens 15 April 2024

From 15 April 2024, UQ Lakes station will reopen. Buses will operate under a new stop layout, servicing both platform 1 and platform 2.  

Stop A on platform 1 will be a dedicated metro testing stop. Between April and late 2024, customers will not be able to board metro vehicles. Metros will also utilize the vehicle charging bay located in the middle island of UQ Lakes station. 

Stop B on platform 1 will be used by existing buses for the 139 service and 169 service.  

All other services will be on platform 2 at stops C, D and F.

Metro depot

As part of Brisbane Metro, a new metro depot is being constructed at School Road, Rochedale, adjacent to the South East Busway. Construction is underway, with completion expected by the end of May 2024.
