Adelaide Street Bus Stop Precinct Improvements Trial | Brisbane City Council

Adelaide Street Bus Stop Precinct Improvements Trial

Brisbane City Council has completed construction of the Adelaide Street Bus Stop Precinct Improvements Trial. The project improves the passenger experience, through the installation of wayfinding signage and rationalisation of street furniture at several stops. This project aligns with Council’s Brisbane Vision 2031 to provide a safe, accessible and well-connected city for everyone.

Project summary

Address Adelaide Street, Brisbane between Edward Street and George Street
Ward Central
Project outcomes Improve accessibility to and maintain efficiency of bus services.
Latest update

The project was completed in late January 2019.

About the project

Adelaide Street is the primary east-west connection for bus services travelling into and through the Brisbane City centre. The overall increase in bus services and the many bus stops spread out along the street have made it more difficult for pedestrians to navigate this area and access bus services.

The project has made it easier for passengers to identify and access bus stops and improve pedestrian thoroughfare along Adelaide Street. This project aligns with Council’s Brisbane Vision 2031 to provide a safe, accessible and well-connected city for everyone.

Benefits

The Adelaide Street Bus Stop Precinct Improvements Trial:

  • improved urban amenity
  • enhanced bus system legibility and useability
  • maintained bus operational efficiency and capacity.

Project scope

This project has made it easier for passengers to identify and access bus stops and improve pedestrian thoroughfare along Adelaide Street.

Works included the installation of a new wayfinding system suite of signage between Edward Street and George Street, including:

  • bus stop identifier signage
  • bus route and timetable information panels
  • bus stop/platform identification signs attached to shelter awning
  • gateway entry signs at intersections of Adelaide Street with George Street, Albert Street and Edward Street.

In addition, street furniture on the southern side of Adelaide Street (between bus stop 42 and 45) has been rationalised by:

  • aligning seating to be parallel to the street
  • realigning bins and bike racks to improve pedestrian thoroughfare on Adelaide Street.
