St Sebastian’s Active School Travel app

This year, the year six students from St Sebastian’s School at Yeronga created the ActiveGo machine and app to electronically measure and report Acitve School Travel (AST) data. In doing so, they covered the entire year six design technology curriculum and won second prize in the University of Queensland’s Young ICT Explorer competition!

The ActiveGo system collects information about students’ and parents’ daily travel time and mode of transport through a tactile Makey Makey board. The ActiveGo system encourages healthy competition and promotes community support by gamifying the active travel experience and providing a leaderboard to showcase the top class and individuals in the school.

To get feedback and advice from Brisbane experts, the year six class presented the system to the General Manager and Community Manager of Fishburners, a Brisbane tech start up hub.

Following the Fishburners presentation, the students went straight to Council Chambers where students Matilda Fawcett and Harriet Morgan presented to a full Council meeting impressing the Lord Mayor, Deputy Mayor and all the Councillors. Mansfield State School’s ‘Tech Girls’ are also working on an AST app and we are excited by all our schools’ work in this space.
