Active School Travel - Public transport

Walking to and from public transport is an easy way to incorporate exercise into the daily routine. Children can read, listen to music or have time to chat to friends while on-board their journey to and from school. It also supports their sense of independence. Not only does catching public transport reduce traffic congestion, it also contributes to cleaner air.

Catching public transport can be up to four times cheaper than travelling by car and students travel on a concession rate. Students will need a go card to travel on a bus, train or ferry to school and they are available from many locations. Register your child’s go card so it automatically tops-up to have funds in the account. Registered cards can also be cancelled if lost.

Schools on the Active School Travel (AST) program have access to free bus orientation sessions where students learn the logistics of catching a bus safely. Find out more about safety on Council buses.

Meet PT

The Active School Travel character, PT loves catching public transport and her favourite is the bus. She catches a bus to and from school using her go card. PT always says hello to the driver, knows where to put her bag safely and offers her seat to adults when the bus is full.

PT's top tips for travel

  • Wait safely at the bus stop away from the road.
  • Make sure you hail the driver.
  • Let passengers off the bus before you get on.
  • Store your school bag in a safe place away from foot traffic.
  • Always stand for adults if the bus is full.
