Land Street underpass duplication - Auchenflower

The Land Street underpass duplication project was announced in 2016 and included as part of Brisbane City Council's Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane (BB4B) program, creating dedicated bikeways and active travel options with a $100 million investment from 2016 to 2020.

About the project

Council recently investigated options to improve safety and capacity at the Land street underpass at Auchenflower. The underpass provides a pedestrian and cyclist connection under Coronation Drive, linking the Bicentennial Bikeway to the Western Freeway Bikeway (via Sylvan Road) at Auchenflower.

The Land Street underpass duplication project propsed constructing a new underpass beneath Coronation Drive at Auchenflower, to enhance safety and capacity by separating cyclists and pedestrians, and converting the existing underpass into a pedestrian only thoroughfare.

Project update

Due to construction impacts and community feedback, Council has identified the project would not provide significant value or benefit to the community and has decided not to proceed with the proposed design.

During the design process, Council identified that the site's proximity to road infrastructure and the Brisbane River would lead to a number of design and construction challenges. As detailed design progressed, the project team identified further constraints that would significantly increase construction risk, timeframes and impacts on local residents and road users.

Community feedback

Council has listened to community feedback received during construction, which indicated the project had lower levels of community support than the other four signature bikeway projects being delivered under the current BB4B program. This included feedback from cyclists about the current need for the project and preference to prioritise other projects. Council thanks residents for providing feedback during the consultation period by emailing or calling the project team, completing the online survey, or attending one of the community information sessions.

Budget allocation

The budget allocated for the Land Street underpass duplication project will be reallocated to other current projects in the BB4B program and is not available for funding new projects. The program aims to progress the network of bikeways servicing Brisbane's top employment areas, in conjunction with a focus on improving bikeways linking to suburban shopping strips, schools and public transport hubs.
