About the project

Council maintains a regular inspection and maintenance schedule of all Council owned infrastructure, including the Mariners Reach Riverwalk. These inspections are conducted to ensure the safety and longevity of boardwalks.

As a result of these investigations, the Mariners Reach Riverwalk, between Newstead Avenue and Evelyn Street, Newstead, was identified to be deteriorating due to corrosion. Works are required to enhance the life of the Riverwalk and ensure it remains safe and serviceable for the benefit of all users.

Project information

To improve the safety and life of the Mariners Reach Riverwalk, Council will undertake work to replace the deck and supporting beams. In particular, the following work will be carried out:

  • Demolition and replacement of existing deck structures and headstock beams.
  • Repairs to any remaining concrete structures.
  • Repairs or replacement of any existing timber structural elements.
  • Demolition and reinstatement of any rock walls along the landward side of the boardwalk where required.
  • Landside stabilisation works.
  • Removal, storage and reinstallation of existing balustrades and seating.
  • Reinstatement of vegetation and planting.
  • Repairs to some stormwater drainage where necessary.
Note: The Mariners Reach Riverwalk, between Newstead Avenue and Evelyn Street, will be closed for the duration of the construction works.

Works will generally be undertaken onsite between the hours of 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. When necessary, works may also be undertaken on Saturday between 9am and 5pm to where tide conditions are favourable and Council will provide notification ahead of such works.

Works will be conducted from a barge in the river adjacent to the Riverwalk and access to the site will be required via the pathway through the Mariners Reach apartment complex, from the intersection of Newstead Terrace and Maud Street to the Riverwalk. Residents are advised that the pathway will be closed, and alternative routes should be used.

Nearby residents may notice construction noise associated with this work, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We will keep local residents informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause increased disruption during the construction period where possible.

Pedestrian detour

A detour for cyclists and pedestrians will be in place during the Riverwalk closure. Signs will be placed along the detour route to direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic and where necessary, traffic controllers will also be in place along the detour to help facilitate safe crossings. In order to provide the appropriate ramping and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists during construction, Council is required to temporarily occupy five on-street car spaces on Newstead Terrace. These car spaces will be reinstated once construction is completed.

Council is committed to minimising the impact of the works on the community as much as possible. We would like to thank local residents and Riverwalk users for their patience and understanding during these important works.
