|Address||North Brisbane Bikeway, Spring Hill|
|Project outcomes||Increase safety and amenity for all pathway users|
|Latest updates||Stage 1 works are complete and construction of stage 2 will start in March 2019.
About the project
To enhance the safety of the bikeway network and increase cycling in Brisbane, Council is continuing to install lighting in key sections of the bikeway network. This will improve the amenity for all pathway users. These upgrades will encourage increased walking and cycling as part of a safe and accessible network enhancing Brisbane’s environment and minimising traffic congestion.
The Normanby Fiveways Bikeway lighting project is part of Council’s Better Bikeways for Brisbane program, creating dedicated bikeways and active travel options with a $100 million investment.
As a result of multiple requests from the community to improve safety, this section of the bikeway has been identified for lighting and pathway upgrades. The section of the North Brisbane bikeway is adjacent to the Brisbane Boys and Girls Grammar Schools. The North Brisbane bikeway is a primary cycle route from the CBD to the northern suburbs and carries high volumes of both pedestrians and cyclists.
This project is jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. The state government has contributed 50% of the funding.
This project involves installing new LED lighting along an existing section of the bikeway behind the Brisbane Boys Grammar School and Brisbane Girls Grammar School, between College Road and Victoria Park, Spring Hill. The existing concrete path will also be upgraded where possible, to provide a wider pathway, which will improve safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.
This project is being undertaken in two stages. Stage 1 works were completed in July 2018 between College Road and Brisbane Boys Grammar School, Spring Hill. Stage 2 works will be undertaken on the section of bikeway behind Brisbane Girls Grammar School and sections of the bikeway within Victoria Park.
Construction of stage 2 is anticipated to start in March 2019.
Improved visibility will assist all pathway users to safely move through the area. An increase in walking and cycling can have a positive impact on the health of our community and the number of cars on the road.
Impacts during construction
The North Brisbane Bikeway will be temporarily closed during stage 2 from College Road to Victoria Park to enable construction works to go ahead. Signed detours will be in place detailing alternative access as required.
Construction works will generally take place from Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm. Some works may also be undertaken on Sundays. Council will work diligently to minimise construction impacts. However, properties in close proximity to works may experience some dust and noise during construction. Council will endeavour to keep this disturbance to a minimum where possible. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers from construction vehicles are unable to be switched off.
No changed traffic conditions are expected as a result of this project. However, traffic controllers will be onsite when required during construction to ensure a safe road environment for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Construction of Stage 2 is anticipated to start in March 2019 and be complete in May 2019. Council will provide further information on Stage 2 prior to the start of works.
