|Address||North Brisbane Bikeway, Spring Hill|
|Project outcomes||Increase safety and amenity for all pathway users|
|Latest updates||Stage 1 works are complete and construction of stage 2 will start in March 2019.
About the project
Council is continuing to install lighting in key sections of the bikeway network to enhance safety. This will improve the amenity for all pathway users and minimise traffic congestion. These upgrades will encourage increased walking and cycling in Brisbane.
The Normanby Fiveways Bikeway lighting project is part of Council’s Better Bikeways for Brisbane program. Council is creating dedicated bikeways and active travel option with a $100 million investment.
Council identified this section of the bikeway for lighting and pathway upgrades to improve safety in the community. This section of the North Brisbane bikeway is adjacent to the Brisbane Boys and Girls Grammar Schools. The North Brisbane Bikeway is a primary cycle route from the CBD to the northern suburbs. The bikeway carries high volumes of both pedestrians and cyclists.
Council is jointly funding this project with the Queensland Government’s Cycling Network Local Government Grants program. The state government has contributed 50% of the funding.
New LED lighting will be installed along the bikeway between College Road and Victoria Park, Spring Hill. This section of the bikeway is behind the Brisbane Boys Grammar School and Brisbane Girls Grammar School. Council will also upgrade the existing concrete path where possible to provide a wider pathway.
The project has been split into two stages. Council completed stage 1 works in July 2018 between College Road and Brisbane Boys Grammar School, Spring Hill. Council will undertake stage 2 works on the section of the bikeway behind Brisbane Girls Grammar School. Stage 2 also includes sections of the bikeway within Victoria Park.
Council anticipates that stage 2 of construction will start in March 2019.
Improved visibility will assist all pathway users to safely move through the area. An increase in walking and cycling can have a positive impact on the health of the community.
Impacts during construction
Council will temporarily close the North Brisbane Bikeway during stage 2 to enable construction works. Signed detours will be in place detailing alternative access as required.
Construction works will generally take place from Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm. Council may undertake some construction works on Sundays. Council will work diligently to minimise construction impacts. However, properties in close proximity to works may experience some dust and noise during construction. Council will endeavour to keep this disturbance to a minimum where possible. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, Council is unable to switch off reverse beepers from construction vehicles.
There are no expected changed traffic conditions as a result of this project. However, traffic controllers will be onsite when required during construction.
Council anticipates that stage 2 of construction works will start in March 2019 and be completed in May 2019. Council will provide further information on Stage 2 prior to the start of works.
