About the project

Council has identified the need to improve safety for cyclists and other road users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection. As part of this project, improvement works will also be undertaken at the Land Street underpass, in Auchenflower, and at the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek (near the intersection of Lang Parade), in Milton.

Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection, Auchenflower

Work at this intersection will improve safety and visibility for cyclists travelling inbound on Land Street, towards the Wesley Hospital and Bicentennial Bikeway. Works involve:

  • reconfiguring the traffic lanes on Land Street, to provide one dedicated left-turn lane, and one through traffic lane (the dedicated right-turn lane will remain)
  • installing dedicated bicycle traffic lights and adjusting the traffic signal phasing to separate cyclists continuing straight from left turning vehicles
  • installing 30 metres of safe cycle separators to separate the on-road bicycle lane and the adjacent lane
  • extending the green pavement treatment along 30 metres of the on-road bicycle lane
  • updating pavement markings.

Local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, vibration, lane closures and some traffic delays.

Signage and traffic control will be in place to guide road users through the site, with the speed limit reduced to 40km/h. Due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Following these works, there will be permanent traffic changes to this intersection. Download the project plan in your preferred format:

Land Street underpass, Auchenflower

Improvement works on approaches to, and inside, the Land Street underpass, will improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Works involve:

  • upgrading pavement markings to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic, and minimise potential conflicts
  • installing directional signage and speed limit signage at the underpass entrance on Bicentennial Bikeway
  • installing a sensor and electronic signage at both entrances to the underpass, to notify when other users are travelling through the underpass.

Local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, vibration and some access changes.

For the safety of workers, pedestrians and cyclists, the underpass will be closed during construction hours for a total of approximately six days over the project duration. During construction, a pedestrian and cyclist detour will be in place via Sylvan Road and Land Street. Signage and traffic control will be in place to guide users.

Pedestrians will also be able to use an alternative detour via the stairs on Bicentennial Bikeway, adjacent to the Coronation Drive and Chasely Street Intersection. Download the detour map in your preferred format:

Please note that due to the lead times for the manufacture of the sensor system and electronic signage, this will be installed in the coming months. Council will provide further advance notification of the installation works.

Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek, Milton

Improvement works at the Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek will improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at the intersection of the Bikeway and the pedestrian underpass near Lang Parade. Works involve:

  • removal of existing pavement markings
  • installing new pavement marking and signage to better direct cyclist and pedestrian traffic and minimise potential conflicts.

Local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, vibration and some access changes.

For the safety of workers and pedestrians, the pedestrian underpass at Western Creek, under Coronation Drive, will be closed for a total of approximately four days over the project duration. Signage and traffic control will be in place to guide users through the area.

Project benefits

The Patrick Lane intersection improvements project will improve safety for all road and bikeway users at the Patrick Lane and Land Street intersection and Land Street underpass in Auchenflower and Bicentennial Bikeway at Western Creek in Milton.

Council has taken on board feedback from the community and is undertaking these works in response to concerns about conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and motorists in the area.

Timing

Construction of the Patrick Lane intersection improvements project will start on Monday, 15 April 2019 and will take approximately three weeks to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

Works at each of the project locations will generally be undertaken between 7am and 5pm. However, where lane closures or bikeway closures are required, works will be undertaken at off-peak hours to minimise disruption to road users and bikeway users.
