Vulture Street and Montague Road intersection upgrade - West End

Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce works to construct the Vulture Street and Montague Road intersection upgrade in West End started in late June 2018.

This project is part of Council's $1.3 billion commitment to take real action on congestion by focusing on a range of solutions to improve the existing road network, getting residents home quicker and safer.

Project summary

Address Vulture Street and Montague Road, West End
Ward The Gabba
Project outcomes Improve connectivity, safety, congestion and traffic efficiency.

About the project

The intersection of Vulture Street and Montague Road carries approximately 13,000 vehicles per day, with traffic analysis showing that the intersection is currently approaching capacity.

The Vulture Street and Montague Road intersection upgrade project will provide new traffic signals at the intersection to improve connectivity, safety, congestion and traffic flow for all road users.

The project involves:

  • installing new traffic signals, including controlled pedestrian crossings across Vulture Street and Montague Road
  • constructing dedicated right and left turning lanes on both Vulture Street and Montague Road
  • providing dedicated on-road cycle facilities through the intersection
  • constructing accessible kerb ramps to the new pedestrian crossings
  • installing a traffic island and painted median island on Montague Road
  • minor road widening of Montague Road
  • asphalt resurfacing of the intersection
  • relocating a loading zone on the southern side of Vulture Street
  • removing 26 on-street car park spaces to enable the upgrade.

Construction impacts

The removal of five trees on the western side of Montague Road was required to construct this upgrade. These tree removals have been carried out in accordance with the relevant legislative requirements and approximately 10 trees will be re-planted in the local area in line with Council’s offset planting policy.

The majority of works will be undertaken between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Friday. These works will predominantly be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are lowest to minimise traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of road users and road workers. Where day works are required, they will take place from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm.

During construction, local businesses and nearby residents can expect some construction noise, dust, low levels of vibration and increased truck movements along Vulture Street and Montague Road. Motorists may experience changed traffic conditions during construction, including temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits and traffic-controlled lanes along Vulture Street and Montague Road.

Council is committed to minimising the impacts on the community as much as possible and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period, including asphalt resurfacing works. We thank you for your patience while these important works are undertaken.
