About the project

Brisbane City Council has identified the intersection at Widdop Street and the Toombul Shopping Centre at Nundah as a location that requires safety improvements to cater for the existing and future demands of all road users in the area.

A variety of road users including cyclists, pedestrians, motorists and heavy vehicles currently move through the busy Widdop Street and Toombul Shopping Centre intersection.

Increasing traffic volumes will make access for cyclists and pedestrians through this intersection difficult and unsafe.

Signalising the intersection will make this safer for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

The project will also provide a signalised pedestrian/cycle crossing for the Kedron Brook Bikeway which crosses Widdop Street.

It has also been proposed to reconfigure Walkers Way, off Widdop Street to allow left-in only and left-out only access to improve safety for all road users.

This upgrade is part of Council’s $1.3 billion commitment to more than 90 road improvement projects, to take real action on congestion by focusing on a range of solutions to improve the existing road network, getting residents home quicker and safer.

In early to mid-2018, investigation works were undertaken in the area surrounding Widdop Street and the Toombul Shopping Centre to inform design options for an intersection upgrade.

Key features of the project:

  • installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of Widdop Street and the Toombul Shopping Centre access, including signalised pedestrian/cycle crossings
  • constructing an additional northbound lane
  • bridge widening
  • reconfiguring loading dock access via a new driveway off Widdop Street
  • reconfiguring access to Walkers Way to left-turn in and left-turn out only from Widdop Street
  • minor relocation of the adjacent northbound bus stop
  • new line marking.

Council will be holding information sessions for the community in September 2018 to give you the opportunity to talk to members of the team about the project.

Project timing

  • Preliminary design and survey works – early to mid-2018.
  • Detailed design – late 2018.

Benefits

The project aims to improve the safety for all movements at this location while also ensuring the continued efficient operation of the local transport network.
