During both world wars, in the interest of national security ‘aliens’ had restrictions placed on them. The word alien described residents who were not native-born or naturalised. Australia interned almost 7,000 people during World War I. Most of those interned were classed as 'enemy aliens', that is, nationals of countries at war with Australia.
