About the project

Upgrades to the Fernvale Road, Homestead Street, Tarragindi Road and Beverley Hill Street intersection commenced in May 2023 and are now complete.

The aim of this project was to improve safety for all road users with a new intersection layout and pedestrian crossings. It was important we improved safety at this intersection, as the existing roundabout was substandard according to current design standards.

The project design improves safety, accessibility and visibility for all road users with a new intersection alignment, three new pedestrian crossing facilities, and line marking and signage for clear road delineation. These new features improve sight lines on each approach to the intersection and moderate vehicle turning speeds, creating a safer environment for our community.

The project included:

  • replacing the existing roundabout with a new four-way priority-controlled intersection
  • removing existing traffic islands on Homestead Street, Fernvale Road, and Tarragindi Road
  • installing new kerb build outs at the:
    • corner of Beverley Hill Street and Homestead Street
    • corner of Beverley Hill Street with Fernvale Road
    • corner of Tarragindi Road with Fernvale Road.
  • installing new pedestrian refuge islands on Tarragindi Road and Fernvale Road to connect with the new kerb build outs
  • upgrading kerb ramps and footpath connections to current standards
  • a new coloured pavement treatment on Fernvale Road
  • installing yellow no stopping lines on each approach to the intersection
  • general road line marking and turfing
  • reinstating sections of road surface with new asphalt.

Design review

Council is committed to ensuring our projects deliver balanced community outcomes. An independent technical review was completed to assess the intersection upgrade design. This included a technical review of the road alignment and intersection geometry, and an assessment of the design for compliance with operational functionality and road safety to the relevant standards.

The independent review found that the intersection design is safe, compliant with all relevant design standards, improves pedestrian safety and ensures traffic flow is comparable to the previous arrangement.

Timing

Construction started in early May and was completed in late June 2023.

Some final work to reinstate a fence and retaining wall will be completed over the coming months, not impacting the intersection operations.

Council will be undertaking footpath improvement works nearby the intersection in the coming months, which is separate to this project. This will provide further improvements for pedestrians.
