Brisbane City Council is upgrading the Edward Street and Alice Street signalised crossing to provide a continuous, safe and accessible link to the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge landing plaza area, city-wide walking, bike riding and e-mobility networks and improved connectivity to public transport services in the CBD.
Construction
Construction activities are anticipated to start from early February 2024, with works expected to be complete in early May 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Work will be undertaken Sunday to Thursday, from 7pm to 5am. These works are required to be completed at night, when traffic volumes are lowest, to ensure the safety of road users and workers and to minimise traffic disruptions. Wherever possible, noisy works will be completed before 11pm.
Works will include:
- modifying Telstra services on Edward Street
- constructing new paved footpaths on either side of the street corner
- adjusting the bike ramp connecting the CityLink Cycleway to the signalised crossing to suit the new footpath and kerb build out
- relocating the existing temporary traffic signals into their permanent positions
- resurfacing the corner of Edward and Alice streets and installing new linemarking
- reinstating driveways for the Stamford Plaza and the City Botanic Gardens
- installing new kerb and channel, concrete islands, bollards, drainage and landscaping.
Works will be managed by Council and undertaken separately from the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge construction carried out by Connect Brisbane, led by BESIX Watpac.
What to expect
If you live in, or are travelling through, the area, you may experience:
- localised traffic changes including reduced speed limits, single-lane closures and full road closures of Edward Street from Margaret Street to Alice Street at night between 9pm and 5am, as required
- when full road closures are required, a detour will be in place with traffic controllers onsite to assist road users around the area, the road will be reinstated at the end of each night’s work and open to traffic during the day
- temporary footpath closures on Edward Street, with signage and traffic controllers to direct pedestrians around the work area, as required
- construction noise, vibration, lighting and some dust from machinery, equipment and trucks
- increased truck movements through the area to transport machinery and materials.
