Brighton Road safety improvements - Sandgate
We’re planning an upgrade to make Brighton Road safer, including for people crossing the road and moving through the area.
Our Local Access Network Improvements program delivers small but important upgrades to help make our suburbs safer and more accessible, particularly for pedestrians.
In late 2022, we engaged with the community about improving the 2 pedestrian crossings on Brighton Avenue in Sandgate, between Fourth and Fifth avenues. Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback since then.
We’ve considered the mixed interests of the community, along with our technical assessment and design requirements.
Now, we’re moving forward with a design that prioritises safety for pedestrians.
As part of this project, we are:
- changing the zebra crossing on Brighton Road near Fifth Avenue into a raised zebra crossing
- changing the zebra crossing on Brighton Road near Fourth Avenue into a staggered 2-stage refuge zebra crossing
- installing fencing at the centre median of the 2-stage crossing
- removing 2 trees and some small shrubs to accommodate the 2-stage crossing, and replacing 2 trees
- installing a traffic island on the north-eastern side of the 2-stage crossing
- removing the Fourth Avenue right out turn by extending the centre median on Brighton Road
- painting new line marking
- installing minor landscaping and lighting.
Two on-street parking spaces will be removed on the northern side of the 2-staged crossing. This is to make sure pedestrians and motorists can see each other clearly at the crossing.
See our frequently asked questions under resources for common enquiries.
Come meet the team at Einbunpin Lagoon Park on Saturday 25 and Thursday 30 October 2025 from 9am to 11am to ask any questions about the project.
We’ll share more details about construction as we get closer to starting works in early 2026.
