Brighton Road safety improvements - Sandgate

We’re completing upgrades to Brighton Road to make it safer, including for people crossing the road and moving through the area.

Our Local Access Network Improvements program delivers small but important upgrades to help make our suburbs safer and more accessible, particularly for pedestrians.

As part of these works, we are:

  • converting the zebra crossing near Fifth Avenue into a raised zebra crossing
  • converting the zebra crossing near Fourth Avenue into a staggered 2-stage refuge zebra crossing
  • removing 2 trees and some small shrubs
  • replanting 2 trees
  • installing a traffic island on the north-eastern side of the 2-stage crossing
  • removing the right turn out of Fourth Avenue into Brighton Road by extending the centre median on Brighton Road
  • painting new line marking
  • installing minor landscaping and lighting.

Two on-street parking spaces will be removed on the northern side of the 2-staged crossing. This is required to make sure pedestrians and motorists can see each other clearly at the crossing.

  • October 2025: Project update and community engagement.
  • Mid-May 2026: Construction is anticipated to start.
  • Late June 2026: Project completion.

Works will take place from mid-May to late June 2026, between 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday, weather and site conditions permitting.

These works are required to be undertaken at night when traffic volumes are at their lowest. This is for everyone’s safety and to minimise disruption to the road network.

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice:

  • increased noise, dust, vibration and vehicles
  • changed traffic conditions, including minor delays, lane closures, detours and reduced speed limits
  • traffic controllers and signage onsite.

On-street parking within the works area will not be available while construction is underway.
