Dorrington Park playground upgrade project - Ashgrove

Link copied

We're upgrading the much-loved Enchanted Forest playground at Dorrington Park, Ashgrove, creating a safer and more accessible space to enjoy.

This project is part of our ongoing work to improve local parks. The improvements will create safe and welcoming places for families and the wider community. These spaces will support play, relaxation and social connection close to home.

The final concept plan is now available and outlines the proposed upgrades to the playground. The design improves safety, accessibility and play opportunities. The upgrade will remain within the existing footprint to help protect mature trees. It will also preserve the park's natural, leafy character.

The upgrade will include:

  • three enchanted forest themed play zones: The Enchanted Village, The Whispering Woods and Mushroom Hollow
  • unique nature-inspired play elements, forest characters, discovery trails, cubby houses, garden-themed features and grassed mounds for natural seating
  • new play equipment, including climbing, balancing and sensory elements, so children have more ways to play, explore and stay active
  • dedicated areas for younger children and older kids, so different ages can use the space more comfortably
  • upgraded playground surfaces to reduce trip hazards and support safer play
  • improved pathways so it’s easier for people with prams, scooters and wheelchairs to move through the playground
  • more open layout with clearer sightlines, making it easier to supervise children
  • additional shaded seating and improved amenities so families can gather, relax and stay in the park for longer.

In late 2025, we asked the community to share feedback on a draft concept plan for the playground upgrade.

Feedback was collected through an online feedback survey, in-person information kiosks and conversations with park users and the ward office.

We heard from people who use the park regularly. Many people visit the park every week and also spend long periods there. The feedback was clear and consistent.

The community told us they value:

  • the Enchanted Forest character and imaginative play experience
  • natural shade and mature trees
  • a safe, inclusive space that is easy to use and supervise children
  • more variety in play, including options for older kids
  • more seating to support longer visits
  • better pathway accessibility for people with prams, scooters and mobility needs.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their feedback.

This input has directly shaped the final concept plan by informing us what people love most about the existing playground. This helped preserve its much-loved character while improving the play experience for everyday use and for generations to come.
