Council is completing improvements within the Emma Street precinct to improve safety and reduce traffic volumes.

Council is completing improvements within the Emma Street precinct, bordered by Birdwood Road, Logan Road, Marshall Road and Joachim Street. These works will help to reduce rat-running, slow down traffic and make the area safer for everyone, whether you’re walking, riding or driving

This project is part of our Local Area Traffic Management program, making streets in Brisbane’s neighbourhoods safer to travel through.

Improvements for this project include:

  • installing a mix of landscaped, stencilled and standard speed platforms on Emma Street, Navy Street, Crown Street and Walter Street.
  • installing pedestrian islands at the intersections of Birdwood Road and Navy Street, and Hamel Road and Navy Street
  • painting threshold treatments at the intersections of Logan Road and Crown Street, and Marshall Road and Emma Street
  • installing a pedestrian island at the intersection of Crown Street and Walter Street
  • undertaking minor turfing and landscaping
  • installing 7 new street lights and upgrading existing lighting in the area
  • painting new line marking, including yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines.

Check out the improvements in more detail in the Resources tab

Works will take place from early June to late August 2026, subject to weather and site conditions. Work hours are 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice:

  • increased noise, dust, vibration and construction vehicles
  • changed traffic conditions, including footpath and lane closures, and reduced speed limits
  • our site laydown area located on Navy Street near Birdwood Road
  • traffic controllers and signage onsite.

As works are spread across the precinct, crews will move between sites, so you may notice some stop-start activity. To keep everyone safe, you won’t be able to park within work areas while construction is underway.
